I wish there were a way to move up over the next 14 days to grab Oladipo. I want him. If Burks had any value the FO could swing it...

13 Days

13 years ago the Jazz selected High Schooler DeShawn Stevenson with the 23rd pick of the 2000 draft. By the time teh Jazz were selecting Kaniel Dickens with the 50th pick Stevenson was already in trouble.

NBA Draftee in Fight in H.S. Gym

CLOVIS, Calif. (AP) - Deshawn Stevenson got into a brawl at a gym shortly after the high school star was drafted in the first round by the Utah Jazz.

The 19-year-old guard was in the middle of a fight involving 20 youths following a high school all-star game Wednesday night, witnesses told the Fresno Bee.

Stevenson was punched during the melee and was able to get to his car and drive away, the newspaper said. Witnesses said police arrived and placed two men in a squad car.

Stevenson arrived at the gym after halftime. He signed autographs, shook hands with fans and sat in the center of the bleachers to watch the second half.

Joaquin Lopez, a school custodian who saw the fight, said Stevenson was jumped.

``He got punched and then landed some punches of his own,'' he said. ``Then four of them chased (Stevenson) up in the stands and beat on him before he got away.''

Lopez and a second witness, Will Goldbeck, said Fresno City College basketball coach Denny Aye escorted Stevenson to his new Lexus SUV in the Buchanan High School parking lot as some of the combatants gave chase.

Aye declined to comment to the Bee and attempts to reach Stevenson were unsuccessful.

In Salt Lake City, David Allred, vice president of public affairs for the Jazz, said the fight did not affect Stevenson's standing with the team or the scheduled Thursday press conference to introduce him.

``We think DeShawn is the victim in this situation,'' Allred said.

Stephenson, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, had signed with Kansas but made himself eligible for the draft when it wasn't certain if he would be eligible as a freshman. He was selected by the Jazz as the 23rd pick overall.

Jayhawks coach Roy Williams has called Stephenson one of the most gifted recruits he ever pursued. Last season, Stephenson averaged 30.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists a game as a senior at Washington Union High School.

Buchanan administrator Lemarr Treadwell also witnessed the fight and told the Bee he saw Stevenson leave the gym with two individuals in pursuit. One of those, according to Treadwell, was ex-Clovis High School standout and Fresno State football recruit Chris Sims, who played in the all-star game.

``Chris was put in a squad car, and one other man was put in a squad car,'' Treadwell said.

A woman at the Clovis Police Department, who declined to identify herself, said she was not allowed to comment. She said a report might be available Thursday.

Lopez said four Clovis police cars arrived at the scene shortly after Stevenson's departure.

``There were several small fights going on at the same time all over the gym,'' Lopez said
.

In 1985 the Jazz had the 13th pick in the first and second rounds. They Selected Karl malone and Carey Scurry. Scurry played 2.5 seasons with the Jazz . Back then the draft went 7 rounds, the jazz had traded thier 3rd round pick to detroit, but in the 4th round (13th pick)they selected Delaney Rudd. Rudd did not join the Jazz until 89-90 season when he had 13 assists in the playoffs that year serving as Stocktons primary back-up, a job he held for 2 and a half seasons until he was challenged by rookie and the 21st pick in the 1991 draft, Eric Murdock.

One thing this shows, is KOC drafts NBA players. Only two of the last 10 couldn't play in the NBA: Snyder and Almond. It also shows you the Jazz have been DESPERATE for a SG and have reached at that position. Knowing that KOC players drafted have an 80% shot at a long NBA career is pretty impressive.

Thats some positive spin on things. Stick around here long enough and the place will drive that optimisum out of ya.

9 days 'till drafting

Did you know that the Jazz have never had the number one selection (Magic pick was traded predraft) but in the modern era (since 1985) there have been 9 teams who have selected 1st more than once. The amazing thing is the Bulls since loosing Jordan and Pippen have had the #1 pick twice (Jazz 0).

Something else to consider is the list of teams that selected 1st and then competed in a Championship series-- Cavs with LeBron, Nets with Kenyon Martin, Magic with Howard and Shaq, Philly with Iverson and the Spurs with their twin towers: Only the Spurs won a championship.

The Jazz have only had 9 picks since 1982 that were 14 or higher. (Does 1982 count since the pick was quicly sold to pay the rent?)

That is interesting and seems true. It goes against KOC always saying that he takes the best player available.

How so? If you consider wings, bigs and PG's as the playing positions, you would expect a PG to be drafted 20% of the time (1 out of 5), and bigs (2/5) and wings (2/5) 40% each. So out of th0se ten picks, we have two PGS (Maynor, Williams), three bigs (Humphries, Kosta and Kanter) and five wings. That's only one variance from the expected norm over a very small sample size. But I would expect any franchise to use "need" as the tiebreaker if the next two or three players on their board at the time of their selection are very close in terms of overall ranking.

Maybe he was talking about my "reaching for sg's" comment. Who was taken after Snyder/Almond that were obvious picks? I'll look into this in a minute.

2004 (Snyder) - Josh Smith, JR Smith and Kevin Martin were all available. JR Smith and Josh Smith were both HS players, a bit riskier. I don't remember good/bad about Kevin Martin.

2008 (Almond) - Afflalo was available and that was it.

So, all in all, KOC didn't really "strike out" in those drafts, they just sucked anyways and two HS players panned out quite well (and who knows if JR Smith would have done anything in Utah).

Splitter was available in 2008. That was the guy I wanted.

I was just looking at SG's. Splitter was available, but he wasn't coming over right away, and we had Memo and Boozer at that time. We were recently removed from the WCF's. All we needed was a SG and we would contend....ah, those days when we could dream...

8 days to draft day.....

With the 3rd pick in the 2005 draft, the Jazz selected Deron Williams who has worn #8 in each of his 8 seasons. The Jazz traded with Portland to get the third pick they gave up the 6th pick (Martel Webster) the 27th pick (Lianas KLieza) and the 30th pick in the 2006 draft (Joel Freeland).

Trading back hurt Portland that time, and they learned their lesson. The next draft Portland traded with Chicago to move up from #4 to #2 to get LaMarcus Aldridge (Chicago took Tyrus Thomas). Then Portlanded traded up from #7 to #6 with Minny to select Brandon Roy. Minnesota selected Randy Foye, who wore #8 for the Jazz last season.

The 21st pick in the last 8 drafts are:
Jared Sullinger
Nolan Smith
Craig Brackins
Darren Collison
Ryan Anderson
Daequan Cook
Rajon Rondo
Nate Robinson
