Stockton IS involved with the Jazz

All good businessmen have great networking skills. I don't have a problem believing it at face value that another GM/GMs gave him a heads up because they have that type of relationship.

Yeah, now we're getting warmer. I think this is the piece of info Lindsey was referring to. It enabled us to prepare for a deal with Minny beforehand.

The question is then - how did KOC get that info??? Was it legit or under the table or what?? What did we have to "pay" to get that info.

He might have been trying to work a deal with Dallas at the time to get there pick and they told him no because they had a trade in place with Boston. And Boston had said they really wanted Olynik. knowing that and that Boston would now be picking in front of the Jazz might be all there is to it.

KOC was a stud too, y'all. Don't go on forgetting now. Him and Lindsey are just running circles round the NBA right meow. It's not even fair

That is the speculation. I know thats what Locke threw out there, He knows that the the Jazz really wanted Olynik and when they found out he was going to be gone at 13 it really pushed them in to trading up.
That would be my guess. I think the Jazz would have been willing to trade up into the 6-9 range for two players: Zeller and Burke. Possibly McCollum had Trey been taken by Detroit. Had they stayed at #14, they were probably targeting Olynyk, especially after his shooting display during their workout. Then they may have tried to buy a pick to combine with the $21 to move up for Larkin or Schroeder. I know we still need a stretch 4, but I couldn't be happier that the draft unfolded the way it did.

Kevin definitely has friends around the league. Could have been one of Boston's rivals hoping he would then trade ahead of the Celtics and screw up their plans. Philly perhaps? Could have even been an agent.

Found this in the trashcan in Lindsey's office: "Dear Dennis, Trey Burke is a true pass-first PG which the Jazz haven't had since #12 retired. I think he has the potential to be the 2nd best PG in Jazz history. Sincerely, John Stockton"

Thanks for making me laugh. That was classic.

I think this is what happened. They thought they could get Olynyk at #14. When KOC found out that Olynyk would be gone, he knew that they were stuck with crap. I don't think the Jazz thought they would get a pg at #14. I think they thought they would draft Olynyk. They found out Olynyk was going to be gone and their options were Larkin, Shroeder, Gobbert...aka...crap for the #14 pick. So, two hours before the draft, they ramped up trade deals with teams. Then the Jazz LUCKED out in having Burke fall. There was no need for Portland, Minnesota to get a pg. McCollum is valuable because you can run him with a pg. You can't do that with Burke. So, Burke fell to Minnesota, Minnesota could draft Shabazz or trade with Utah and pick up #21 along the way.

So, I think the source was legit, and was helping KOC out, not hurting anyone else. It was more of a "hey, dude, you got nothing at #14, get to work" type thing, and with the draft going nutso, we were able to snag Burke. The stars just aligned.

This is all good stuff. I guess the agent thing is a possibility... but Burke's agent is his dad though, so not sure if he has enough connections to pull something like this off.

- It couldn't have been Boston (because they want Olynyk, so there is no need for them to tell us their plans)

- Similarly with DAL - no way they want to help us AS WELL AS messing up the BOS/DAL trade.

- Can't be POR, they never help us.

- What would Philly have to gain in us getting the #9 pick? They needed a PG after the Pelicans' trade, why would they risk us taking one of the guys they want?

- OKC? No way they wanna help us.

======================================

One guy I think could have done this is Olynyk's agent? May be he knew that BOS/DAL is working on a deal to get him? So he gives UTA a call as we may move up in front of DAL to grab him, hence Olynyk could go higher?

I can see Boston/Dallas letting KOC know. A gentleman's tip.

"Hey, KOC, we are tight. I know you wanted Olynyk, but Boston's taking him at #13. Don't go get him, but if you any worthwhile player, you better move up."

The mechanisms of an intelligence network are floooooring nickkk right now. Crazy stuff, eh?

You won't get to the bottom of this with your own powers of deduction. You dont know nearly enough. The end.

But you're assuming BOS/DAL knows the Jazz likes Olynyk??? With the way GMs keep their cards close to their chest, there is no way KOC would have told anyone that we liked Olynyk.

The only guy KOC would have told is Olynyk's agent (just to test/see if there's any deals being done - that's how crafty KOC is IMO).

- KOC would have said something along the line of: "Hey, we like your guy...."

- Then I reckon Olynyk's agent let it slip: "Wow..that's cool, but just as a heads up? We have a team trading up ahead of you to grab him. I can't say who it is, but just to let you know in case you can make other moves to get him, Olynyk would likely be be gone when you're picking".

To me that's a very real possibility. Nobody's doing anything wrong. The agent is well within his right to say "something is going down" but not revealing the team. KOC is well within his right to ask. Lindsey is therefore very comfortable in telling the WHOLE WORLD about this.

No dodgy deal. Everything would have been legit.
