Cuts

Why? You must not have watched the preseason games.

Yeah, I did. I just thought that Jazz were more likely to keep 14 than 13. He's bigger and has a higher ceiling than Jeffers. Plus, a lot of the media thought the Jazz were semi-high with keeping him, ala Locke.

I agree with you that I thought the jazz would keep one of those guys. However, I thought thompson was the least likely to make it, and was the least likely BY FAR.

Whats makes you think he had a higher ceiling than jeffers? He never showed that he could really do anything well. Jeffers at least could rebound and defend.

I heard locke say that he thought that Thompson was the only one who didnt deserve to be on an NBA roster.

No, they're already approx. $7 million over the luxury tax, don't want to spend any more money.
As to the first part of your sentence, Luxury Tax is assessed on a team's salary at the end of the season, not the start, so they could have kept any of these guys until the first week of January and then cut them before their contracts became guaranteed, and they wouldn't have cost a cent in Luxury tax.

As to the second part of your sentence, you nailed it. They still have to be paid while on the roster, and clearly the Millers had no intention of paying even minimum salaries for a day longer than absolutely necessary, even if it means starting the season with only 12 healthy players.

It was really the media hyping Thompson. They were trying to create buzz and declare someone "this year's Matthews." There will only be only Wesley. I guarantee it. The next CBA will close the loophole allowing a surprise like Matthews to earn 2x what the #1 pick makes in his second year.

This season's Matthews for us is Jeremy Evans. Yes, he was drafted. But I'm pretty certain only Utah had him on their board. And he was supposed to be a "project." But he's going to earn some valuable PT this season. Let's just hope a trade or injuries don't make him a starter.

Yes, totally. There can only be one Matthews. Also, Evans will be the second Matthews.

Also don't forget the new D-League rules. Three of the cuts can be assigned to Orem - if they choose to play in the D-League vs. going foreign. And I'm assuming that's what the Jazz will do with Gaines, Jeffers and Thompson. They'll be unprotected, but at least one of them will probably still be around if the Jazz need an extra body due to an injury or trade.

I could be wrong, but I think this only applies to new D-League contracts. The rights to Jeffers and Gaines would be owned by their previous teams. That doesn't mean they still won't be available, but I'll be a little surprised if Gaines doesn't end up on another NBA team's roster.

I believe that would be on salary paid as of the end of the season, not on the salary cap number at the end of the season. So, money paid in November to a player cut in December would still be taxed.

Yes, totally. There can only be one Matthews. Also, Evans will be the second Matthews.

The logic is indisputable.

Questionable move by KOC. Pretty lean roster now. Evans and Hayward better be ready for the big time.

There will be a lot of talent on the waiver wire today and tomorrow. There will be a whole league of players more than willing to come play for the Jazz.
