He's also smart enough to know that a trade demand would hand cuff Utah into dealing him for the best deal possible, which means he goes to a sucky team, and in return we would get the only decent players they have.

For the life of me, I have no idea why Melo and CP3 can't figure this out.

Players really can dictate which teams they go to. If a player demands a trade and there's a deal in place with Memphis or whoever and the player says "Hell no I'm not playing there" then obviously that team would back out of the deal.
