Undercover liquor cops have busted a Salt Lake City bar for allegedly selling bootlegged beer.
The Spot, located at 870 S. Main St., was locked up Friday, and no one answered the telephone. No signs were posted on the door listing business hours or whether it was closed.
The bust in May was conducted by undercover liquor sting officers who ordered two unauthorized beers, drawn from a list provided by another bar owner. The agents purchased Alaska Winter Ale and 90 Shilling Ale, and then confiscated eight other bottles of beer not sold in state liquor stores. Officials said because the beers cannot be purchased in Utah, it appears that the products were brought from out-of-state, in violation of state liquor laws.

So the bar was illegally importing certain beers (wish I would have known, I would have really liked to try to the 90/- Scottish ale) that are not available through the Utah State Liquor Agency. What really gets under my skin is that they were tipped off by the owner of The Bayou who claims he called the DABC to find out why he couldn't serve those beers, which he says his customers were asking for after getting them at The Spot.

tl;dr -- you have been saved from illegal immigrants.

What would we do if government didn't tell us what we can and cannot put into our bodies!!!

So glad the government is here to make sure I don't make bad life choices. I wouldn't know how to take care of myself.

The Bayou has made a name for itself in the homebrewing and craft beer community (It's where the Beehive Brew-Off announces winners). This isn't going to help them at all. In fact it could be disastrous for them. The comments on the Trib are not a good sign.

There is a sense in the Utah craft beer community that we're all in this together trying to push the oppressive yoke of the DABC off our shoulders. Then they "sweep the leg" of one of their rivals who managed to provide their customers with beer otherwise unavailable in Utah. It's just dirty and will not play well in a community that has a big "local first" mentality.

Glad we have our priorities straight. I get checked up to 2-3 times per week riding UTA, assuring nobody is stealing two dollars and fifty cents, while we cut highway patrol funding which lets drunk drivers go rampant. SMDalamon.

Plenty of room in my book for USDA type agencies. Moonshine can make you go blind, bad meat make you go mad.

This looks to me more of a technicality issue, and I expect the courts to show appropriate compassion. Then again, our justice system has been completely perverted with this tactic of charging the maximum possible b.s. to urge a plea bargain, which normally happens to be way more than is deserving unless the media gets involved.

Perhaps the liquor commission can explain why we can't get that beer here.

The DABC will bring in any beer you want... provided you buy all of the minimum order they have to purchase. In my situation I would have had to buy 32 cases of the beer I was looking for. As much as I like it I wasn't ready to shell out the money they would need to provide me with what I was looking for.

Snitches get stitches.
