Is anyone else watching under the dome?

Not sure I like it yet. The writing seems very weak and the acting is mostly crappy. Lots and lots of inconsistencies.

Its WAY different from the book and once I got past that I enjoy it.
The actor playing big jim rennie is really good. (Hank from breaking bad)
And the redhead reporter is hot as hell.

The thing that is getting to me is how most of the characters just do so many stupid things. The cop is beginning to really get on my nerves. She goes between being level-headed and semi-intelligent to seriously stupid. The "why the hell would anyone do that" moments are ruining it for me.

When she found the kids had the little dome in their room, and she freaked. Screaming it's police property, not listening to even the adult in the room in the tiniest bit, acting like it's a poisonous nuclear bomb, then just "oh fine I will put my hand on when there is no way I will let anyone else touch it." Then getting blown across the room by the thing. Just stupid.

And the dialogue from the extras borders on ridiculous. I know it is an experiment in what would happen to a society if suddenly it is cut off from every contact with the outside world, but even under the worst of circumstances I can't imagine most people acting that way. Unless this is the town of moronville, where everyone is stupid to begin with. Every episode they have Jr. do whatever they need him to do to get the story moving in whatever stupid direction they need it to, no continuity of character at all. "Oh I hate my dad worse than anything in the world and I want to be the one to kill him!" "My dad is the only thing saving this town, don't you hurt him." "My dad is wonderful he will know what to do." "Oh I hate my dad so much." What?

Something to keep in mind is this has been just a few days. It's not like it has been months under the dome, but days. The townspeople sure don't seem to have any real connections considering it is made out to be a small town where everyone knows everyone. One local guy, within the first 3 days, takes the only source of water hostage, and all of his neighbors are very willing to pull guns on the local sheriff and city councilman and shoot their neighbors and presumably friends, until of course the water is no longer an issue then they just bail out and act like nothing happens until the writers need another outraged mob, this time ready to forego any rule of law and hang a man just because big jim rennie, who they make out to be a well-respected businessman one time, a lying snake that no one trusts another, tell them they need to hang the ONLY stranger in their midst to "send a message" that this won't be tolerated. Send the message to whom? Seriously stupid.

And some of the connections the people make are just stupid and would never be a connection any normal person would make. Oh you hate me and have made it clear you never want to see me again because I locked you in an underground dungeon for 3 days and the last time I tried to kiss you, which was just yesterday by the way, you almost threw up and tried to kill me with a hidden knife, but now that I am doing something important at the hospital you want to make out and it can't be anywhere near the unconscious woman I am guarding, that's not weird. But oh no! You taste like cigarettes, when I know you have been an on and off smoker for years, what they hell are you up to?!?!? Oh no, must be something to do with the unconscious woman! What?

And they always know more than they should about things, or assume one thing then instantly assume the opposite if it fits where the story needs to go next. I think this whole thing was written by the famous latin writer Deus Ex Machina.

And the egg makes no sense. Here is an egg in an indestructible bubble that shocks everyone almost to death if they touch it and are not allowed, but hey, if you 4 special people put your hands in it just in this spot it will destroy the bubble and expose the egg. Now you have to protect the egg because if you don't everyone will die. Just ignore the fact that until the bubble went away it was completely protected and in no way subject to harm in any way. So yeah, just throw it in the lake, that's better than an indestructible bubble of energy to protect it. What?

Suspension of disbelief is almost more than I can muster anymore. It plays out like an after-school special or a story some kids are cooking up around campfire.

"Hey I know, then the bubble pops cuz that would be cool."
"Yeah, then the egg is exposed and everyone wants to get it."
"How about then this woman appears and tells them they need to protect the egg or they will all die."
"Oh yeah, then maybe they can throw it in the lake."
"Cool!"

Yeah Thriller I think you hit this one on the head. Pretty dumb.

The sad thing is, it isn't the premise that is dumb, but the way they have handled it. The writing is beyond stupid. The acting marginal at best. Yeah there is a hot ginger, and Hank is there. But Hanks acting is pretty heavy-handed and the dialogue they have him speak is so fake and stupid it always sounds rehearsed and trumped up. And he shifts between a street-wise big city way of talking and a down-home country bumpkin way that makes it seem like neither the actor nor the director really know what the character is supposed to be doing.

Yes she is.

We are going to finish out the first season,. I am holding out a (very) little hope that they will explain something about the aliens or the egg or whatever that makes the erratic behavior and crappy acting understandable. But I generally liked the book and just hate seeing the story get butchered so badly. But you know, this is the MO when King has anything to do with the conversion of his stories to the big, or little, screen. Every time he is involved it ends up being a hot mess. Compare The Shining movie to the Pet Sematary movie. The shining was tight, scary, had you on edge the whole time, well-acted. A good movie. Pet Sematary was disjointed, cartoonish, bad dialogue, bad transitions, not at all scary, and just stupid, when it was probably the scariest book I have ever read. King tends to destroy his own work to get it to look EXACTLY like what he thinks he saw in his head when he was writing it, which just doesn't work.

I saw 10 mins of one of the first episodes and noticed everything LG just ranted about.

Dumb.

The problem is, the network will merely replace it with another equally dumb show with perhaps even worse acting.

How odd. I had no idea that this was a series, or that the book even existed until yesterday when I started reading it. I'm to the part where the dome has just come down and is making people crash/cutting people in half. So far, so good, but I don't know if I have such a good feeling about it after reading a few of the semi-spoilers in this thread.

The book is GREAT!
And the tv is extremely different from the book

Yeah the tv version is not much like the book at all except some people have the same names and it is about a town called Chester's Mill that has a mysterious dome dropped on it suddenly, and the comedy that ensues. That's where the similarities stop really.

I wanted to also chime in and agree about King movies that suck balls. I'm TERRIFIED that the Dark Tower movie is going to suck... I almost don't want to watch it, because if it gets butchered, it will be one of the biggest let down's since Jordan hit "The Shot". My feeble psyche can't handle another broken heart like that.

If King let's a competent producer and director handle it, I imagine it has a good shot to be pretty damn great. If Kind gets involved, count on a pile of steaming ****.

I'm hearing it might end up being a series.

Case in point..... shawshank, green mile

i think you overestimate humanity.

As of now, I think, Ron Howard is on board to direct it. I had heard rumors a few months ago that Russell Crow was playing Roland... It sounds like that is no longer a rumor, and Crow is it. Ugh. Part of me wants to scream "NOOOOOOOO!", as there isn't a single thing about Crow that even remotely portrays Roland. Worse than Afflack as Batman, if that's even possible. On the other hand, I am one of the few people I know who really liked A Beautiful Mind, and that was Howard and Crow at their best. I'm torn.

As of now, I'm reading that it will be three films with an HBO series between them to fill in the massive story and plot. If there ever was a way to get it done correctly, I think this is it. I can't wait to see the rest of the cast, especially Eddie Dean.

Not a fan of Crow in this role. King himself said he always pictured Eastwood in his early westerns when he thought of Roland, and really a late-90's Eastwood would be about perfect for the role. I think they need to go a different route with it and find a newcomer who can pull off the Eastwood look and feel better. Kind of like the way that Josh Brolin pulled off such an awesome Young Tommy Lee Jones in MIB 3.

But I also have never been that impressed with Crow to begin with. I liked Beautiful Mind, but still am not a Crow fan.

I have thought that Garret Dillahunt could pull off Roland. He has done a lot of character actor stuff, like in Looper and No Country for Old Men. I think he has the look and some of the mannerisms, and he has always seemed solid. Not sure he can make the leap to that big a starring role though.
