What's new

Why are we playing at such a slow pace?

They can't run because they allow too much penetration and kick. It forces them to drop guys deep for help d and rebounding while the opponent has 3 guys in position to pick off outlet passes or trap, or simply get back and defend. The Jazz haven't really had the personnel to push hard anyway.

Deciding to give up layups, offensive boards or the three will be a huge factor tonight.

Yeah, I've seen that. But that's another reason why our defensive rebounding rate is so troubling.

I mean, a defensive rebound starts the break, so these issues are related.

I've noticed this as well

Jazz get into sets late, too.

Jazz defensive rebound rate is putrid, too, so I suppose more bodies are needed for rebounding.

Favors and Kanter ever learn outlet passing? Ostertag, with all his faults, was actually good in this regard.

Still need to get out and run more. Burks is best in open court. Hayward is competent.

We need Kevin Love outlet passing...

I feel that they can choose not to do this. We need to let Kanter and Favors control the middle and if they get burnt they get burnt. I think that those two have plenty of size to get the board. Kanter is not a good high pick and roll defender anyway he should stay deeper inside.

I also think we do have the personnel. Hayward can definitely run a hell of a lot better than he can finish when he drives in the half court offense.

Agreed. They also over help way too much on the pnr against Favors. It's not Favors' guy who has been receiving a lot of the layup passes, it's the wing's guy after the wing comes over unnecessarily, and doesn't commit anyway because his job is to flash and get back. He hasn't been doing either (J. Evans has been real bad in particular).

Hayward -- sucks at 2ndary break which is all the Jazz have been creating.

Right so we totally agree on this point. The question is why? Is corbin not telling them to get back or are the players ignoring him. I would really like to know the answer to this. You're the only one on here that knows Ty... so, could you tell me?

When the season started, I thought to myself:

*We have two great rebounders in Favors and Kanter.
*Burke, Hayward, and Burks can all handle it in the open court. And, they can finish in transition
*We're gonna suck at half-court offense.

I'm just stunned that we're playing so slowly.

My thoughts exactly. I thought after being benched for so long this team would be aggressive and run. When you can't do pretty much anything in half-court you just rebound and run. Kanter and Favors was crucial for this as I thought they could be both 10+ rebounders.

I also thought we would be a good defensive team causing TOs and Blocked shots and converting them into points via fastbreak but nada.

Corbin needs to accept his team's weaknesses and use them as a weapon. He should give up the inside and break the make IMO. If nothing else it would wake Favors *** up. That guy gets so damn distracted on d .

I think the problem is we are not playing fast enough. I think when you don't play at a fast pace you end up playing at a slow pace. I could be wrong though.

Hayward is magnificent in the open court and transition. Jazz are probably trying to get him on the cheap, tbh.

Seriously though, I do not understand why, with Favors, Hayward and Burke, we are not running every chance we get. For that matter, Marvin is great in transition as well.

Don't know what schtick you are talking about. I do however enjoy taking the conversation back to the OP in oversimplified terms as a way to hyperbolically point out that the conversation is moving in circles or has otherwise seemed to hit a dead end. Or just because I find it mildly humorous. Sometimes it is ok to have a minor chuckle now and then. Take your pick.

I think it's interesting that you think this conversation has already exhausted itself. I mean, it isn't like this is a central issue to the outcome of the games we've played. It's all a sidebar.

I'm sure this has been mentioned (I only got through the first 10 or so posts..) but coaches that expect to lose/be outmanned tend to want to slow the pace of play, keep the scores low and keep it close hoping to pull out a close game. The more you run, the more possessions, the more likely you could be blown out.. which is bad for job security.

JLIII + Kanter gassed + injury returns
Remember, this is an avg across all games including the JL3 for 30 min games. I wouldn't be surprised if the pace has picked up with our new starting lineup and with Trey
