Kind of a steep price. I didn't see the system specs or if it can accept standard video card upgrades or whatnot.
I sort of like the idea of these steam machines but I'd like to see a bare-bones system that I can add my own equipment to unless they can get me something very powerful for an exceptionally good price.

Yeah it's good to see though. There have only been a couple prototypes and they already are showing imagination and options. I've been looking to build a new pc but I will probably wait for steam os. If I like it then I can save some money avoiding windows. From what I hear Steam os should reduce the hardware requirements for pc gaming.

still rather build my own custom pc for gaming
The only exception for me would be if they can offer a very good value for performance. If I could slap together a system that meets their specs for close to the same price then it's not for me. But I'm happy if it helps bring more people into PC gaming.

The first one is supposed to retail at $500 and comes with a controller and all the free games on steam. That's competitive with the consoles and since it's a pc it's also upgradeable.

You have to have a 500GB or larger hard drive? I use SSDs and they are not bigger than 500GB.
