Right, but I think the Cavs had declared an arbitrary earlier deadline so that any players coming back in the trade could pass a physical. I might be wrong about this, however.

The Cavaliers are offering that cost savings to teams around the league in hopes it'll deliver Cleveland back a player to help them make the playoffs this year.
Cleveland has talked to the Utah Jazz about trading Bynum for forward Richard Jefferson, but has yet to re-engage on those talks over the weekend, league sources told Yahoo Sports. The Cavaliers are willing to part with a second-round pick in a Bynum-for-Jefferson deal, which Cleveland officials believe is likely enough return to make the transaction worth the Jazz's trouble.

Utah will lose Jefferson without compensation to free agency at season's end, and a pick gives them some value for a player they acquired in a Golden State Warriors salary dump last February.

Cleveland has one of the poorest rosters of small forwards in the league, and Jefferson would give the Cavaliers an upgrade. Jefferson is in the final year of his contract and has played well offensively for the Jazz this season. Utah is committed long-term to a young core of perimeter players.

Jefferson, 33, has played 12 years in the NBA, including stops with the Nets, Bucks, Spurs, Warriors and Jazz.

I am sure DL went to the Cavs and told them that if they can't find a better offer for Bynum then he would be willing to do RJ for Bynum and a 2nd rounder. I think it would be a done deal if that offer was on the table. My guess is that it wasn't. I would do Jefferson for Bynum straight up if that's all they were willing to part with.

I think Cleveland realized it may be smartest to hold onto Bynum as there's plenty teams who are not just ready yet to rebuild their team and want to get payroll/tax deductions. But on draft night some might feel they wanna strike a deal and simply get $12M off their cap for free agency.
Somehow mid season is buyers' market, offseason sellers' market.

I honestly hope this is a joke! Trading one of the better leaders and teachers on the team for a washed up POS center in Bynum who doesn't even belong in the human race, let alone the NBA. If this goes thru, I will be pissed!

That's why Cleveland does the Jefferson Deal. They get to keep that expiring at 11 million, get to add a player that would be a positive influence in the locker room, RJ is actually an upgrade to whatever they have, and they get to wash their hands completely of Bynum. To keep the exception they have to technically keep Bynum on the team.
