The defense really isn't that good. I've seen it kick in for stretches, but rotations aren't tight, guys are confused on switches, and Al/Sap are still figuring out how to patrol the rim as a unit. I can't account for the 11th in Efficiency, but I would say small sample combined with a few teams bricking is helping. I also wonder if the enormous number of offensive rebounds is adding "possessions" to make the numbers look better than they are. Either way, we're a long ways off where we need to be by the second half.
Are we allowing less posessions per game? That would be improved defense.

I've watched Jazz play a few teams that couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. This had nothing to do with Jazz defenCe, but has padded their stats significantly. To credit the Jazz, it seems like they've lost a lot of long rebounds. This isn't due to poor boxing out, and at least they're making them miss the first shot.

Then it's a flawed stat. It should count as a new a possession because they get a new shot clock to set up a new offensive set.
The Jazz defense is much better forcing lower % shots and getting a hand up and challenging shots. I tend to agree with the statement that the rebounding is a matter of getting used to each other. So far Millsap and AL challenge players a lot more often putting them out of position for rebounds which means guys like AK, Cj, Raja, Deron and the rest of the bench need to be a lot more active boxing out and attacking the glass.
It's a new mindset for our wings however and they need to learn it. And it may take a little time until it becomes 2nd nature to do it.
Weird. I was under the impression that the less possessions you allow the other team, the less they will score in general. I was not aware that it doesn't matter if the other team shoots it 80 times, or if they shoot it 100 times. My bad.

Possessions per game is purely a matter of pace. Possessions do not equal shots. I must assume you must think it's good offense if you get more possessions per game, which is humorous to think about.
To clarify, a team can ONLY have one more possession than the other team per quarter. A team has 23 possessions a quarter? The other team MUST have 22, 23, or 24 possessions that same quarter. Defense/Offense has nothing to do with that.

I actually think Al's defense is underrated. Yes he has to box out more because he lacks that fundamental, which is pretty hard to develop when you're used to just raise your arms to grab rebounds over the top of everybody. He also needs to learn how to play better team defense, meaning coming from the weak side to alter/block shots and covering the ball-handler in a pick-and-roll.
But look at him when he's playing against big men like Dwight Howard. Howard was not as nearly dominant against the Jazz as he was versus teams with supposedly better defensive centers (Hawks with Al Horford, Nets with Brook Lopez, Pacers with Roy Hibbert, Grizzles with Marc Gasol). He also did well against Pau Gasol in the two preseason games, granted the games didn't count.
Anyhow, Jefferson's D >>> Boozer's D, maybe other than defensive rebounding.
