What's new

So Memo went through a full practice today........

I would give Okur the slight advantage over Jefferson defensively. Jefferson is a better shot blocker. They're both flat-out bad help defenders. We underrate Okur's man-to-man defense on big men, which is above average -- he gives the effort but his slow feet hamper him against quicker big men. I have yet to see a consistent effort from Jefferson on that front. Both are better defenders than Carlos Boozer.

Count me as one of the people who want to see, at least in limited minutes, how a Memo-AJ-Millsap-AK-Deron lineup would do.

Memo needs to be focused on going hard, especially on the defensive end, in his minutes when he returns. He won't be counted on (necessarily) to be on the court for 30+ minutes a night (since AJ, Fes AND Elson have proven to be passable centers), so he should be able to use his 6 fouls and play tougher and faster than he has in the past. If we get the same sluggish (especially in transition) Memo as always, I will be very disappointed.

Lost in all the discussion is that Memo is a pretty decent rebounder. I remember how (i forget his name) always harped on how rebounds are defense. He took a lot of abuse for that, but I think we are seeing now that he had a valid point. Playing the best defense in the world is of limited value if you give up offensive rebound after offensive rebound. I personally like Memo coming back. He gives us an extra offensive dimension, plus he rebounds, which as this point, I'd be thrilled to have in spite of his other defensive limitation. If we can't solve the rebounding problem there's problems a brew'n ahead.

Sorta sad that some here actually think it will hurt the Jazz to have Memo back. Blind haters are gonna hate.

'May be' and 'slightly?'

LOL @ that absurdity. Big Al Jefferson is the better player in nearly every discernible facet of the game and by a considerable amount as well.

Maybe, maybe not. But what can't be argued, is he doesn't understand the system as well yet.

A better player? I'll nibble... maybe. But a better Jazzman? not likely.

He averaged 13.5 PPG last season. That's before the injury, and when he was a year younger. His career average is also around 13 PPG. He did average 17 a couple of seasons, but we might as well get Malone, who's a proven 30 and 12 player! But knowing Sloan, we'll probably get 30 MPG of The Glacier once he's back anyway.

The reason he averaged 13 PPG last year is because they rode Boozer all year long. Memo was a VERY important part of Boozer averaging 20 PPG last year.

I heard on 1320 that Memo went through a full practice, meaning he should be ready to go sooner than later.

Now is this good news, or bad? No, it can't be bad news, but what will the team do with minutes? And how about who starts at the C? Sloan has always said you don't lose a position due to injury, so Memo should start. So who get's benched??? Millsap? Al? AK? (J.k.)

Personally I think the answer is Memo should get very restricted minutes util he is back into game shape, and then we see who is preforming the best. Memo will probably never play quite as well as he used to, so he probably doesn't start this year or the next. Too bad about the injury, but I'm sure the team will welcome his abilities considering how pathetic our bench has been this year.

You may see him start when he comes back, but think nothing of it. When a player is coming off a serious injury, it's usually better to have them play when they're already stretched out (i.e. after pre-game workout) rather than go through the warmups, sit on the bench for 12 mins and then come in cold.

Yes, he will play restricted minutes. I see him getting no more than 10-15/per game for the first month. I understand the concern over cutting into the mins of Fes and Elson. But we desperately need some outside shooting. Outside of what CJ provides in streaks, the Jazz have no one who can hit from 18 ft. on out consistently. Well Deron, but he's been aboslutely turrible of late. What I hope to see is AK playing less at the PF position and the mins coming from the SG's. Reduce Raja's mins. by 10/per game. He should be playing no more than 20. CJ can play in the 25-30 range depending on how he is shooting is that night. And hopefully with another threat outside, Millsap or Jefferson will be more effective in the paint.

There are a lot of posters in this thread -- many of whom have opinions that I respect -- that seem to be forgetting that Millsap at SF isn't a new idea. It's an old one.

I think it is worth trying against the Lakers, pitting Sap against Artest, but the vast majority of the time it won't. If we try it, we have to give him the green light to shoot the three if he is open.

I'll admit, I'm curious too... especially since he has found some long-range touch.... but I don't have high expectations.

Deron
AK47
Millsap
Okur
Jefferson

I really want to see this lineup.

Really? I have no desire to see Millsap at the SF position ever again unless it's against the Laker's and Ron Artest(whom I believe Millsap could guard). He's not fast enough, He's not a good perimeter defender, and He's just not a SF. Offensively your lineup would work but defensively it would leak like a sieve.
