Reasons to be thankful as a Utah Jazz fan

November 25th, 2010

Reason to be thankful as a Utah Jazz fan ….

An ownership committed to winning, having a pay roll in the top 10 in the NBA despite being a bottom 5 market size.
An ownership over the years that built a culture. Players win in the NBA, but they must have a foundation of a culture for the organization. A bad culture and even the best players can’t overcome it.
Jerry Sloan
For night’s like last night where Sloan schooled the other coach. He outclassed a good young coach in Monty Williams with his insane 23 years of experience
For Jerry Sloan again for his ability to get this year’ s team to jell as quickly as it has and to have discovered a method to us his players
Kevin O’Connor for putting together a team with a level of toughness we haven’t seen in quite a while. For O’Connor’s understanding of the system and how players will fit.
Deron Williams, simply a pleasure to watch on a night in night out basis.
For Deron Williams insatiable will to win.
For a trade exception from Chicago that yielded Al Jefferson.
A coaching staff that works together without personal drama and makes some of the best in game adjustments in the NBA.
For 11-5
For the scouts Walt Perrin and Dave Freedman who scour the country for the best talent known and unknown and find it.
For the #1 field goal percentage defense in the NBA and three point defense in the NBA
For 6 road wins, all against playoff teams, with 5 from double digits down.
For Al Jefferson and his engaging personality and his desire to be a part of a winning franchise.
For the Weezy
For Paul Millsap and his never ending effort and improvement of his game.
For Raja Bell and his locker-room speech at halftime in Miami and his ability to steal two possessions a night
For insane 4th quarter defense
For CJ Miles and his never ending joyousness and his red hot shooting in Portland.
For Andrei Kirilenko and his extendo arms on defense and unequalled passing skills for a wing.
For Earl Watson and Ronnie Price and their determination and toughness in the second unit that is becoming a force.
For Francisco Elson and his terrific defense in the post.
Did I mention Jerry Sloan
For Kyrylo Fesenko and his never ending humor, smarts and on floor improvement
For Gordon Hayward and Jeremy Evans for the future development and the youthful energy and smiles they bring to group.
For Memo Okur who is on his way back with an amazing dedication level to rehab and who will bring us one of the most emotional nights in Jazz history when he steps back on the floor for the first time.
For a hard working unsung support staff of public relations, trainers, equipment guys, film coaches, strength coaches and many more who do everything in their power to help the Utah Jazz win.
And finally be thankful that you are a part of one of the most passionate fan basis in the NBA.
Thank you.

Worth mentioning twice, perhaps; I can buy the first part of that statement, but the second part seems notably exaggerated.

Sloan maybe gets some credit for happening onto the "prison guards" (Price and Watson) together, but I'm not sure that that's an "in game adjustment." (Playing a lot of Elson and Fes together still doesn't seem optimal.) On the flip side, Phil Johnson made little to no adjustment against San Antonio, going with "his guys" down the stretch, even though more height (mainly Elson; can't comment on Fes because he barely played) and power (against Blair) was in order to protect the paint. Nor did there seem to be much adjustment to Golden State crushing their own averages in rebounding, even when it was plainly clear that Utah's starting frontcourt wasn't boxing out.

Nevertheless, being tops in the league in FG% defense is huge. Bell is probably part of that, plus an overall team focus on protecting the court. But you just can't contest the shot and let 'em rebound it again. Gotta do both. Utah is 3rd lowest in the league in rebound differential, giving up an average net 4 rebounds per game. Having slightly outrebounded LAL and NOH is a step in the right direction.

The field goal % is great, don't get me wrong. But per TICC as of a week or so ago, our PP 100 P's is actually worse than last year. Not sure if that's still the case but...

Rest in Peace Larry. :( You'll be missed. Thank you for making the Utah Jazz what they are.

Pudgers needs to get his *** back in gear. Totally pathetic how he quit his workout regimen.

Dude, I know it. We were PM'ing regularly and it sounded like he was making some real progress. And then he decided to go Ballou on us. Sad and pathetic really.
