Tomic can play in the NBA. The question is if he is willing to take the role and pay cut to do it.
He looks skilled, but he looks a lot more labored running the court than I remember ever seeing him in that video. It is kind of frustrating how you never really know what's going on with teams and their Euro players. Guys just kind of fade away or never come over. I guess it wouldn't be smart for the Jazz to publicly say he just doesn't intrigue them enough or that he doesn't want to come over for whatever reason for trade purposes, but still, seems like there is nothing out there.
Why would he need to take a pay cut? He is not limited to any pay scale, right? He seems proven enough now that he should be able to demand whatever he is making over there.
Not sure how that works. I think there is still some kind of pay scale.
Not for 2nd round picks.
Matthews was a 2nd round pick, his 2nd contract (after 2 years in the NBA) was subject to a pay scale I believe. I think we can pay him more than he makes in Europe, but I still think there is a limit.
Matthews was undrafted.
Things may have changed under the new CBA, but I remember the Jazz paying Miles extra. They had promised to take him with their second 1st-rounder, which of course was conveyed to Portland in the trade to move up for Deron. They took CJ in the second, but paid him 1st-round money (and guaranteed his contract). In the case of Matthews, all the Jazz could do was extend a QO making him a RFA, but the Blazers could offer much more than what a 2nd-rounder or undrafted player would earn. Matthews as an undrafted player was making more than the #1 pick in his draft class in Year 2.Pretty sure Undrafted and Second rounders are considered the same when it comes to contracts.
