The Strange Case of Erik Murphy

The Jazz claimed Erik Murphy off waivers and have yet to play him. Malcom Thomas has barely played. This is like Travis Leslie and Jerrel McNeal last year. I guess this shows that the only players in the Jazz future are the Core 7 and maybe Garrett. I don't get claiming guys and not playing them. It seems like it's flushing money down the drain.

By claiming Murphy, the Jazz can have them on their summer league team and see if he develops enough for next year. Same with Malcom Thomas.

But I would think the front office would like to see how they play in the real thing as well. There are a lot of summer league wonders (see Ian Clark) that don't translate to doing well in the show.

We really want to win a summer league championship! I can't wait, we gunna dominate! Tanking is awesome.

I read that claiming Murphy was a favor to the Bulls to help them get under the luxury tax. It was payback for the Jazz getting picks for the Boozer signing/trade

Wasn't Reagan still President when Boozer signed with the Bulls. That seems so long ago.

You do realize that by having this guys on the roster that the FO and Coaches get to see these guys play in practice and against our teams starters right? It not like they are just showing up an sitting on the bench. You can learn a lot about a player by the way they practice and the time they put in with your coaches and on there own in you facilities.

nope

The jazz gave up a second round pick in exchange for the exception associated with the sign and trade.

No mystery.

DL bought a cheap option (maybe $40K) to purchase a second round draft pick role player stretch 4 at NBA minimum salary.

Would you pay $40K for the right to sign a second round draft pick to a 1-year deal?

Plus he builds goodwill with Chicago who will be more likely to help the Jazz in a similar financial situation.

They see him in practice every day. Don't you ever get tired of being so annoying, you thread whore!

But, but...didn't Ty say a couple of weeks ago we were going to see more of the bench players? I'm too lazy to look up the quote, but I'm pretty sure he mentioned Clark, Thomas, etc. As for Murphy, I agree: Jazz are looking at him in practice and it's primarily a pick up for summer league and next season. I'd say the chances are about 50/50 now for Williams returning. Even before the injury his play had tapered off again. There will be a few roster spots and Murphy can certainly earn a place.
