Trade for a veteran?

For what it's worth, if the Jazz stay at #5, I'd love to see them trade #23 and #35 to move up as far as possible and then try to buy another pick at the end of the first round again (assuming they don't add any other assets along the way).

They might need to decide if they're going to buy out Tomic, but they could package future 2nd round picks into the process to make something work. If they're going to make 3 picks in this draft, I'd much rather it be #5, #17/18 and #27/28 instead of #5, #23 and #35. I loved how they moved around last year. That should be the plan again this year.

I agree that I'd much rather they just draft the best players they can get their hands on instead of trading for a veteran. Just let your young guys grow up to be veterans. And let your young guys add depth to your bench.
 
I think we should define Veteran too. Is it just a player who is in the 5-6 year and beyond? Is it their total career minutes? Is it play off experience?

Even though Hayward and Favors are going into their fifth years I wouldn't call them vets yet. They are still only what 23 and 24? With no playoff wins.

I worry about adding 3 young guys with a new coach, but I wouldn't be against it...

I would want to target a future first rounder and hope we get lucky and they have a bad year. I'd like to put a team in a similar situation that the knicks have put themselves in this year.

If Jazz are really worried about having too many rookies on the team, they can send some of them to the Stampede, which will now be our coaches and system. Seems incredibly antsy of them to talk about getting a crap vet w/ the 23rd pick, when there are other options. 23rd and 35th will = crap vet, make no mistake. We can send rooks to Stampede & pick up some vets in FA, or see what vets & picks we could get w/ cap space again this year. We don't have our star yet, so why should we be discussing vets and exiting asset accumulation mode?

This. If the Jazz want a vet, then re-sign Williams. Thanks to the complete lack of player development from the previous coaching staff, we still don't know what we have on this team. Give Quin a chance to work with our players, and then we might know by the trade deadline where our biggest gaps are so that we can trade intelligently.
 
Can I add a poll to this thread? I'd like to see if people want to keep all the picks or trade a few of them.

Terrance Ross
DeMar DeRozan
Arron Afflalo

But is that who we really want to go after? I really can't think of any other players that fit this similar criteria. So who would we trade for/who do you want to trade for?

I don't want to give up the number 5 pick. I like those names but I don't want to give up #5 unless we get another lotto pick.

Probably only realistic way would be to trade the #5 to the Magic for Afflalo and the #12 (like someone else mentioned). I don't think I'd do that though.

I wouldn't even think of it. Afflalo is 28, and honestly overhyped. He is in a bad conference, and on a bad team. I much prefer Hayward & Burks potential/ upside at the 2, and don't like any of them at the 3. His 3 pt % is unreliable as well, as he shot 30% the previous year. No way in hell am I trading back for him. There are good players available @ 12, but not even close to the caliber of those projected 4-8. Those available @ 12 are only slightly above those available at 23, tier wise.
 
My big concern is that young guys need to play. Now different players are ready for different levels of reponsibility at different times. In the end our front office and coaches need to pick a few guys who can handle big time loads. Everyone else gets put on the back burner.

So bringing in a younger veteran leader makes sense if we know the keepers out of our young guys. Otherwise we need more time to figure stuff out.

Say it with me everyone, "Stampede!"

If there are too many young guys, send them down to our new hybrid affiliate, where they can develop under our system, w/ our coaches, and still practice w/ our NBA team. Absolutely no need to ship off valuable assets for low return before we know what those assets are worth.

I'm not exactly sure how the new affiliation works, but do the Jazz get to select the players that will be on the stampede/send as many guys down as they want?
