What's new

Initial All-Star balloting returns are in

The center position in the NBA is pretty darn weak right now

Only because for some stupid reason all the centers want to be called power forwards. If it plays like a center and is guarded by centers (predominantly) then it is a CENTER, no matter what Gasol and Duncan say. Can't wait for the magic to start listing dwight howard as a forward.

I've never really got into the whole all star game thing. To me, that is the most unwatchable game in any sport (including women's lacrosse) all year.

I hope DWill doesn't make it at all. He could use the rest AND would be pissed he didn't and would go off.

Then again who really believes the Western Conference coach is going to not pick him?

Deron will definitely be there. It's a joke that he's 5th among guards but consider last year this time (https://www.nba.com/2009/news/12/10/allstar.vote.update.1/index.html"]https://www.nba.com/2009/news/12/10/allstar.vote.update.1/index.html[/URL])he was 10th among guards...TENTH! behind the likes of Aaron Brooks, Jason Terry, Jason Kidd, and Chauncey Billups. That progress gives me hope that eventually Deron will rightfully be named a starter - after all Karl Malone certainly wasn't the most popular player ever but he was regarded as the best at his position and voted a starter 8 times in his career.

Top three centers in the voting: Yao, Bynum, Haywood

Funny.

One has only played a handful of games and is out again.
Another has played just 1 or 2 games this year.
Another comes off the bench for maybe 20 minutes a night.

If Jefferson is considered a center, he could get voted onto the team by the coaches.

Pau Gasol is more of a PF than Jefferson is. Tim Duncan has been exclusively a C since Robinson retired, though.

At least Yao MIng and Bynum are getting a lot of votes...

Disagree about Gasol. With as much time as Bynum has missed he has filled the traditional center role far more, and was nothing but center before he got to LA. He is solidly a center.

Agree about Duncan. Even with the admiral is was arguable who was filling the center role on that team. Malone guarded Robinson as much or more than Duncan back in the day.

Duncan's a center. Gasol at PF is more forgiveable. When Bynum's healthy Gasol starts at PF - which he did for the majority of 09-10. He plays center next to Odom though. In Memphis, with the exception of 06-07 when the Grizzlies played small-ball, Gasol was their PF - playing next to the great Lorenzen Wright.
