If we keep Hayward, we actually don't have a ton of cap space next season to spend, not with cap holds for Kanter and Burks. Plenty of room under the tax threshhold, just not enough to go out and offer anything big. Probably in the $8-10M range is all. And that assumes we don't bring in any FA's on more than 1 year contracts this season. This year we have up to a MAX contract to offer...only problem is that the FA market is pretty weak.
 
Honestly, I don't love Vonleh. He may not pan out. Many times with 18 year old kids you draft based on potential. Vonleh has good core skills in shooting (nice jumphook with both hands), dribbling and man on man D. And his size and length is a major asset for him. He has the tools to be great He possesses core skills that are hard to teach. He needs to improve his footwork on both ends of the floors, but this is teachable. If you aren't drafting on potential, don't touch Wiggins either, because he is all about potential.

The fact is, any player we are discussing at 5 could have great potential. If I am gambling on potential, I weigh future upside with current skillset, and take the player that has higher probability for long-term success. I think Gordon could be good, but I have seen too many bigs that just don't improve much with shooting. Of course there are exceptions to the general rule, but based on stats, shooting generally doesn't have a huge improvement.

Favors was all about potential and might be a decent parallel to Vonleh. WE complain about Derrick just not having the killer instinct. Just too nice a guy. That is the risk with Vonleh. He's more advanced than Favors offensively, but like Derrick, doesn't seem to have much fire.

That's one of the reasons I wouldn't be too opposed to the Favors + #5/ Varejao + #1 swap. Parker has an alpha personality - at least offensively. Varejao can bring some nasty, too. And that gives plenty of time for Gobert to develop, if the Jazz believe he can be a starter at some point.

I agree. I know guys that can run 5.0 40's, benchpress 225 30+ times, with long arms who weigh 300 pounds. They played college football. But their measurables in a vacuum mean nothing when it comes to the technique, brute strength and quickness that are needed in the NFL. Vonleh measures so well as far as his standing reach and no step vert go and yet I'm hard pressed to find a highlight of the kid dunking or swatting a shot.

You either play long or you don't. He doesn't despite having strong measurements.

Hell, Blake Griffin had a standing reach of 8'9" with a no-step vert of 32 inches and max vert of 35.5 inches. Vonleh measured at 9'0" and had verts of 31.0 and 37.0. Do we really think Vonleh plays bigger than Griffin, on the offensive end at least? No and it's not even close. The kid doesn't even play remotely big on offense...which let's face it, we could use right now.

I guess what I'm saying is that his measurements and their significance are imo overstated. The kid just doesn't play big on offense, or even defense really either other than in his rebounding. Against the best guys in the world, I think that will suffer though.

Great post. Unfortunately I agree with you, Favors just isn't very advanced offensively, and I don't see that changing. I personally feel like he is overpaid, and if we can move him and bring in better talent, then do it!

Vonleh's Indiana team was terrible. Their pg's couldn't get the ball to him efficiently and it was frustrated watching him. However, Vonleh is only 18 years old, has quick feet, crazy huge hands and long arms. I think he could play the stretch 4 and still play good defense. He is going to take a while to develop, but I think he would be a great pick at 5.

Both are drafted on potential: very young bigs (both turn 19 right after draft), extremely athletic, had ok seasons for their clubs with similar stats without making much difference in team's performance nor helping their teams do well. Volneh seems to have good outside shooting ability, which might (or might not) be developed into a weapon, and Favors is a little bigger and better shot blocker. I think there is a good probability Noah will become a solid starting PF/C in NBA, bringing athleticism and defense, which is very important, but not sure it is very likely he will be a star difference maker. Probably a solid #5 pick, but nothing to get overly excited about, especially since we already have Favors on the roster.

I'm sorry I don't see Bosh. I see Lamarcus Aldridge. I think he has a similar game with bigger (potentially better?) hands.
