Grantland Article on Exum, Vonleh and Gordon

Gordon's my choice also. When you look at what our team needs, defense should be at the top of that list. Defense is our key to success in the West, like the Grizzlies.

To me that's a bit like saying 'fix Sarah Jessica Parker's face and she'd be attractive.'
well he asked the question that if smart and gordons shots were both fixed then would they be equal. i was just answering.

also, if you fixed her face, should would be pretty hawt

still has character red flag and tweener red flag.

fix gordons shot and he has zero red flags
I agree there are concerns with Smart (although I think the character issues are overblown), but why do we only seem to worry about red flags when it's someone other than Gordon. And here we go again with the "if he learns to shoot" argument.
.
This is from Chad Ford this morning. I know it doesn't mean much, but I like Smart, then Gordon.
Chad Ford: I know the Jazz aren't huge fans, but I love Marcus Smart for Utah. I'm not a huge Trey Burke fan. Small, average athletic point guards rarely get me excited. But Smart? I think he adds toughness, leadership and defensive edge to this team that they desperately lack. And Smart's big enough to play together with Burke at the 2 or Burke can back him up from the bench. Aaron Gordon would be another option for them and I like that too, but Smart would be my choice.

And this from Bilas, talking about Orlando's pick.
Jay Bilas: Embiid, or Marcus Smart. I really like Smart. He is a competitor, a winner and every single coach he has played for has absolutely loved him. He is a great defender on and off the ball, he is strong, he can post a smaller guard, he is really good in transition, he's an excellent passer, and he can play the point. The only thing he doesn't do is shoot it, but part of that is his proclivity to take bad shots to prove he can shoot it, which cements the fact that, right now, he can't.

ok
give me some gordon red flags that are not shooting related.

(remember, the question was asked that if you fixed both thier shots then would they be equals. i said no cause smart has more than just shot issues. try to keep up)

1. gordon
2. randle
3. vonleh

...sounds to me like this Gordon fella is just like another Jazz player we had a few years ago.....Ronnie Brewer! Lot's of energy, always moving, good defense, could go to the hoop, lots of alley oops......but couldn't shoot a lick from the outside! If Brewer could have made a jumpshot or two, the Jazz would still have him on the roster....true or false?

TBH, it doesn't take a lot of effort to keep up with you. The other red flag for Gordon, although Gordon homers will disagree, is position. This is from the Grantland piece and I agree.
What position does he play in the NBA? The body of a 3, the game of a 4. Does he know who he is? He was billed as an SF, and he just isn’t right now.

The position thing really concerns me. He’ll guard 3s — that means chasing guys through screens. But you can’t play him defensively against the bigger guys. They are going to torture him in the paint.
In any case, Gordon's shooting isn't just a red flag it's a huge freaking red banner that says CAN'T SHOOT. The only red flag for me with Smart is his shooting, but he shoots 73% from the line so I think he will be a much easier" fix" than Gordon. He brings defense and a toughness that we really need and I don't consider character or tweener to be red flags. I'd be happy with either one but I like Smart a little more.

TBH, it doesn't take a lot of effort to keep up with you.

obviously you have a hard time keeping up because you continue to bring up shooting.

in the hypothetical (hope you understand what that means) brought up, gordon and smart are both fantastic shooters.

so when you continue to bring up shooting it shows that you are not understanding the concept of the hypothetical (hence, not keeping up)

i agree that gordons shooting is a huge red flag and is a much bigger issue than smarts shooting.

But in the proposed scenario we are talking about them both being great shooters and that if that were the case then would they be equals. maybe you think at that point they would be equal or maybe you think smart would be better. Thats a perfectly valid opinion to have.

Oh okay, so I'm the one struggling with the concept of the hypothetical. Let's see. The hypothetical was predicated on Gordon becoming a "respectable shooter" and asked if you applied the same logic (that their shooting could be improved) would Smart be a more appealing player. The hypothetical did not state they would both be "fantastic" or even equal shooters. Smart is already a better shooter than Gordon and would still be the better shooter if the hypothetical played out because they would improve to the same extent.
.
So then you're full steam ahead on the assumption that if they are equal, Gordon is the choice because Smart has character and tweener red flags, while ignoring the fact Gordon might have tweener issues of his own. Look, it's all just opinion. I like them both but lean to Smart. I think of all the players in the Jazz range he is the one I fear the most as an opponent. He will terrorize Trey.
