Jazz acquire Novak from Raptors

I understand that I am looking like something of a lunatic here. That second-year is really bothering me, paired with the fact that he is and always has been one of the most worthless defensive players in the NBA. But maybe he's there as much to help teach shooting to the other guys as anything else (I could actually believe this to be a factor).

Gah. That second ****ing year.

I just want to have a reason to believe that this team really is prioritizing the defense. Something. Anything besides just talking about it. There's not a more crucial time than right now.

Well, we didn't bring Corbin back.

**** it. He's an amazing shooter and a nice guy. Cool. Maybe getting to play this season on a non-competitive team will get him some stats and the Jazz can actually net another small asset by trading him (even though their track record on this front isn't terribly impressive [since trading Memo for HUGE salary relief AND a 2nd rounder which is still a miracle to think about]).

I don't think we have a bad roster in terms of defensive abilities. I think its the scheme from Corbin that made us look so bad. His scheme and getting players on the same page. Development in those areas are huge.
To be determined but at the beginning of last year I don't think anyone thought we were going to be one of the worst defensive teams. I would bet we greatly improve next year.

This is mostly blind hope, IMO. When Gordon Hayward is clearly your best perimeter defender, then you're up ****creek and there's no coach who can do much to save you.

Haha ok i was going to make a post here drunk last night but I waited;

The Tony Jones tweet, that the Jazz see him as a backup to Kanter at PF should scare everyone a bit if true. Steve Novak isnt backup quality anymore, hes an end of the bench guy.

Steve is so bad defensively that teams would be dumb not to focus on him. Hes actually less mobile than Matt Bonner tbh, You're much more likely to see Bonner taking one dribble past a closeout for a better shot.

I've always been a HUGE Steve Novak fan, since college, but it seems in this thread people are overrating him abit, he might be the most stationary player in the league, an absolute turnstile on defense, hes 31..

There's no way hes as good as Jeremy Evans at this point, its not even close.

The question with Novak is if hes serviceable at all, not if hes ready to play backup PF minutes.

He's great for this locker room though, Im sure in practice he can put all the other shooters on the jazz to shame, Novak has the size and shooting mechanics which allow him to take 40 footers in perfect form.

For someone who shoots such a high percentage, hes actually a bit streaky, When Steve is hot, he really gets hot though, Hes a "microwave" type of player, meaning he only needs to make 1 or 2 shots in a row to get really zoned in.

dl builds the spurs way

novak = bonner, and 3 years younger

This guy has a 2-year deal for $7 mil, that's not bad in any stretch of imagination.

Not bad? We just wasted 7 mil of money and cap room for a pathetic scrub. With Hayward likely returning (Jazz said they will match any offer and looks like max offers was just bs) and having just drafted Hood, having Evans, why are we bringing in a scrub forward that is on more than a one year deal, while wasting 7 mil in the process?

Sure, I see how we did a solid to Toronto who wanted to dump this useless scrub, but to take on 7 mil, occupy CAP space not only for this but next year just for a second round pick seems like a very bad trade to me.

Calm down little grasshopper. Very few people are dead eye shooters and we just got one. IMO, Novak's here to essentially be a shooting coach who can play spot minutes. Sure 3.5 mil may be a bit much for this role but do you honestly think his contract will in any way hamper the organization's future?

Thanks for the link but I'm looking for more of the opinions of the JF posters. The board have huge threads about the draft classes and there are folks who follow them closely.

I've done some pretty extensive research on these future drafts, 2015 doesn't have near the depth of this year, and there's no way 2015 is better than 2016 or 2017, but it should be much better than 2013 and 2011.

In 2013 obviously there was no clear cut #1, that will be decided between Emannuelle Mudiay (Athletic 6'4 PG) and Jahlil Okafor. There also looks like a solid top 6 or top 8, something like that.

I dont expect PKM or some of the posters here who follow HS recruiting to be nearly as high on the 2015 draft as me, heres why, I like the International players in this draft, I think they may end up being one of the biggest strengths.

It looks to me like there's a steep decline (into 2nd rd talent) around the early 20's or late teens... So i think the Jazz will safely get a good player without tanking TBH.

Is this draft worth doing a full out tank for? I'd lean towards no.

But if the Jazz were to tank, I'd say they could get paid off bigtime for it, I think a few of the top tier players fit really well here, Karl Towns is an ultra skilled 7'er, hed be worth the tank. If the Jazz were to land a top pick, they might be able to get a kings ransom for it in trade, (Especially if Mudiay is the real deal).

Stanley Johnson (projected top-5) weighed in at 235 lbs at the KD skills camp the other day(hes almost entering Lebron territory), hes a 6'7" SF whos strong as an ox, hes also very explosive, and a monster on defense, the Jazz could use a player like him in the worst way.

[since trading Memo for HUGE salary relief AND a 2nd rounder which is still a miracle to think about]).

Yes, that WAS a miracle that we actually dumped Memo AND got a second round pick in return, but second round picks are not that valuable. What's really pathetic is that Toronto just screwed us just now about as bad as we screwed the Nets in that trade. At least Memo was on 10 mil expiring contract, and there was no commitment beyond one year. We are taking on 7 mil, but over two years, which is worse. Also Memo at least had a chance of being a decent player had he recovered. Novak has been a 12th man on a bad team for some time.

And for what - a second round pick? Toronto just had their way with DL, just like we did with Nets a few years back. Does not feel good to be on the receiving end.

Ummm, no bro.

My goodness people...

We got a 3 pt specialist who can play beautifully in situations for nothing. Garrett is a dime a dozen 3rd stringer. We could easily replace him with a call to UVU's Ronnie Price... Assuming he still plays basketball . Even if he didn't, just bring up some D leaguer. So relax and stop acting like we just traded away Lebron.

Lastly, are you idiots insane? Playing Bonner helped SA tip the scales against OKC. SITUATIONS and MATCHUPS. I know it's difficult for some of you to understand. But for the rest of us who understand basketball, we get it. Not every player is going to be a 20 pt iso player or lockdown defender. Using the logic I've seen in some of these posts here, we wouldn't ever be able to fill in a roster because "x player doesn't defend."

Novak can play a vital role in floor spacing, 4 qtr shooting, and bench scoring. Relax, I doubt he'll have a bigger role than The Red Rocket from SA.

DL is bringing in his SA experience here. He's surrounding us with good athletes and 3 pt bombers. Now hopefully some of the crap drafted by KOC forms into our own Big 3.

It just wouldn't be jazzfanz if folks weren't freaking out and bitching about every move no matter how small it is.
