What's new

Did Dante really SAY THAT??? PART #2!!!!

getting his conditioning sorted to a level where he can contribute for 25 minutes at max tempo without getting completely spent is not that hard. It can literally be done in one month time. Getting his strength to a level where he'd be able to overpower or at least hold his own with the average PG in the NBA is not that easy, though. It requires long-time commitment, gaining some extra muscle mass, core-strength training and good nutrition. I don't think he'd be able to do it by the start of the regular season, but I believe that if he has the determination to succeed, he definitely can improve a lot by the start of his second year in the NBA. Don't forget that he's just 19. A lot of 19 year olds are more like kids, than adults when it comes to body shape. His body will naturally grow into his frame as he gets into his 20s, so in general I am not too concerned about that. I just wouldn't expect him to be at his max right away, this season.

Man, Exum was hurt in his first game? Against men who aren't as big and strong as NBA players? Holy cow!!! Who would have seen that coming?!?

15 mins a night. Work on his shot. Work on his body. Exum's year will be very similar to Gobert's, with five extra minutes a game. Allow him to play in situations where he can improve, not regress.

He didn't get hurt because of a contact with an opponent. He got hurt on a breakaway dunk attempt. But I agree... He needs to work on his body and his conditioning. Today again he struggled mightily in the second half of the game. He actually had a pretty nice first, I thought, even though he didn't score much. The second half was not good and it ended with that weird injury. He's got lots of things to improve on, that's for sure...

So much trolling from you......

I love that quote. I love that he wants the ball and I love that he understands that he has to earn it, rather than expect it to happen from day 1. He seems really mature and very determined to succeed... can't wait for the season to start to see how it all plays out...

Me too. He's only 19? His quote sounds like something a veteran would say - very diplomatic. He's an alpha, he's not used to playing off the ball. He never anticipated being anything BUT a PG in the NBA. And I did like his humility. Doesn't sound like he expects anything to be handed to him - even being the #5 pick.

Not worried at all about conditioning; he's 19, he'll be able to get in NBA shape rather quickly. Passing, speed and size? Already NBA quality. Shooting? Yes, that concerns me. But he has coaches who have worked with other players and improved their games. It's not as if he has terrible form.

If I were Snyder, I'd start by playing Exum purely as a backup to Burke. Trey gets 30 mins/per and Dante gets 18. Let Exum dominate backups, work on his shooting and improve his conditioning. Once that happens, assess team needs in January. And adjust lineups accordingly. I think Hood will warrant a LOT of playing time, which means Utah may not need as much help at SG: Burks, Hayward and Hood are a great trio. Add in a little Felix or Clark in garbage time.

Core4 - you just basically repeated what I've been saying, almost word for word. Nice.

Maybe I didn't watch enough of Exum 5 SL games, but how can some think he's an exceptionally better passer already not having played one real NBA game? I saw nothing from Exum that says he's a better passer yet alone exceptionally better. And to think you can concluded that after 5 SL games really just farther baffles me.

In summer league exum and trey were both playing against the same competition and exum appeared to be the more willing, better passer, with better court vision.

Small sample size you say?..... sure, but it's all we have to go off

Wasn't sure if this had already been posted. It's from an insider article by David Thorpe talking about the biggest draws of summer league.

DANTE EXUM

The next time someone argues to avoid drafting a player because "he's not ready," remember Exum. He is the newest poster child for the argument against that philosophy. The guy has the look of a star -- do you think Utah cares that he's not yet ready to be a good player even in summer league action?

The fact is, when Exum had the ball in his hands, the gym crackled, even though he rarely did anything good. But the signs were all there. Skilled and long, Exum should be a dynamic guard who can play point guard or shooting guard. He can be an excellent defensive player if coached up well, and in time should at least be able to be a solid perimeter shooter.

But it's his quick burst that has experts excited about his future. He also plays with that aesthetic "coolness" few players possess with the ball in their hands. He'll learn how to play in the next few years, and when that happens, he'll be able to dismantle defenses because of his ability to blow by defenders at the right time. He owns lots of similarities to Kevin Durant. For a point guard, Exum has size (6-foot-5) and quickness advantages, just as Durant possesses as a wing.

1st it's an opinion. I didn't see anything about Exum's vision or passing that was superior to Burke's. Next how about instead of making statements on insufficient data you wait until you have something much more concrete to judge off of. That seems like the logical thing to do.

Wow clean your glasses .....it jumped out easily to my eyes the difference in vision ,the willingness to be a pass 1st PG,and how Exum could deliver is passes ..... theirs a blindness if a fan can't see the extra dribbles Burke has to do to set up the angle for his passes, that supposedly in this new pass the ball offense that Burke still looks like last year ,pounding the ball and looking for his shot 1st

Uhhh. Did you not see Smart throw Dante around like a rag doll? So, you think Dante is going to put on 20 lbs in the next couple of months? Yeah, conditioning is one thing, and even though he will be practicing with the Aussies, doing sets, working on shots and technique and not really working on his conditioning, lets pretend he comes into camp ready to go lungs/legs wise. You still don't play him 30+ mins a night.

He isn't strong enough for it. What happens the first time Dwight swats his shot into the third row while the ball is still in his hands? Dislocated shoulder. Or the first time some backup C, Kosta Koufos, body checks him into the cameras under the hoop?

He is just a kid. He has to mature. There are two things you want to accomplish with Exum this year: Confidence and keep him healthy. Playing him 15 mins a game against bench players, when you have a good starting PG already, does both of those things. You didn't draft Exum for this year or next. You drafted him for years 3, 4, 5, and beyond. There is a reason why Lindsay keeps saying fans need to readjust their expectations. The Jazz will develop Exum similar to Kobe's path. 15 mins his rookie year. 25 his second. All-Star his third.

They will work on him learning the offense, improving his shot, dominating scrubs (I can't wait for all the whining here about how he should be playing 30 mins a night because he dominates scrubs), and getting his body ready for next year.

Also, if you think Exum will be conditioned by Oct, then you are crazy. He has done NOTHING the last six months except get ready to play in the NBA...and he couldn't make it up and down the court five times. He will be just as winded this fall as he was this summer.

He cannot put on 5 pounds working out with Kobe for nine months. How is he to gain 20 pounds over moonlight? These people, they think Dante will get strong before he becomes a man are looped in the head. Dante iz three years away my friends.

Im happy with Exum getting in game shape 1st,In basketball speed ,quickness and agility ALWAYS trumped muscles. What got him drafted and too Utah is good enough for now. It's obvious his ceiling is higher than everyone else on the Jazz.
I like that he is working from his strength as a basketball player 1st...his ability to get his team mates good looks at the basket. The rest let him do it at his own comfort speed.Somehow I think he'll pick the nuances of NBA basketball faster than most everyone else.
Fanz are doing what they do best...look for warts 1st and blind to what the experts ,management and scouts see in Exum.
