Also, while it was suicide, I heard he'd been in rehab again recently so I have to wonder if drug use played a role in this at all.

I'm not saying depression isn't a real disease because it is. There are many people who battle it and find the strength to go on. I have had loved ones and a very dear friend who was like a brother to me take their own life and the damage left behind is also immeasurable. If you're that low, continue to try to get help. It's his wife and loved ones that I would shed the tears for. They are the ones who deserve the tears because they are the ones left behind to wonder what they might have done, even if it's nothing. I am watching some good people battle for each and every day so I just can't work up the tears for someone who saw no way out. Sorry.

This is not so cut and dried imo. Help doesn't always help, and often all that help does is make things barely bearable. How long do you want to watch someone languish? Is it selfish of everyone around him to NOT want him to have his release? People that haven't been there cannot understand the despair and pain or how pervasive it is or how alone you can feel because no one else can really understand what you are going through. I can say from experience that it easily rivals cancer treatment, only with cancer at least I knew when my treatment was supposed to be over. With depression people think there is also a light at the end of the tunnel, but often it never gets any closer. Is this potentially an argument for assisted suicide? Moments of lucidity merely become moments that remind you how much you have lost and serve to reinforce the fear that you will never get it back.

I have no idea the answers to those questions, but I think they have to be asked.

Its not for us to judge his actions. Give prayer to those that loved him and are truly affected. Give prayer to him so he may find a greater rest then he did on earth. Don't lower your self by judging him or his life. Again that's not for us. What is for us is to seek out those that are in the desperation that ultimately leads to this type of self destructive behavior and try to help them see what a gift life truly is. We are not the Lord and don't have the authority to make his claims.
