****loads of economic boom in the province-- but also complete environmental abuse, with people living near the developments having elevated rates of nearly every chronic illness you can think of.


Here in Edmonton we have elevated asthma, allergies, celiac disease, colitis, Crohn's (lotta autoimmune disorders in general, etc etc) relative to the rest of Canada due to nearby industry.

So my school is cheaper, jobs are plentiful, but I probably won't live as long.

Heard an interesting bit on NPR yesterday re: Natural Gas drilling. They said that the toxic fumes that are emitted during drilling are often twice as dirty, pound for pound, as burning fossil fuels, but it is overlooked due to lobbiest overload and the government. Essentially, no oversite because their are no regulations, because the gas companies pretty much make the laws and politicians sign them.

I have done zero of my own fact checking, but it was interesting to think about.
