One of the pivotal days in modern day Jazz history (i.e. the post-Stockton/Malone era) may have been the day "insert coach's name here" turned down the Jazz' request for an interview and Lindsey was forced to consider Quin Snyder as a candidate. Face it, he wasn't on the "short list" of any of the posters on this board. Most of us had never heard of him and those who had remembered only the infamous end to his college coaching career. We clamored for Messina, one of the Van Gundy's, Blatt, Hollins, etc.
Is there any question after just three preseason games he's the absolute best man for the job?
So what will it take for him to be considered for coach of the year?
Jerry Sloan, who we all know never won the award, had perhaps his best chance back in 2003-04 when he took a ragtag bunch many had predicted would be the worst in the league - and possibly worst ever - to within a game of the playoffs. The media was talking Hornacek up last season as a serious candidate until Phoenix faded in late March/April.
With a team projected to win under 24 games by oddsmakers and finish at or near the bottom of the WC by the media "experts," I think Snyder has a real shot at making a Hornacek-like run at the award. It's a longshot, but I think 43-45 wins by the Jazz, and contending for a playoff spot all the way to the end would earn him a lot of votes.
