"Williams Brothers" remarks Racist?

The part where he called them scary to look at was racist.

Scary to look at because they are women who look like men, either in terms of facial features or muscularity. Has nothing to do with the color of their skin. I thought Billie Jean King was scary to look at back in her playing days. Does that makes me homophobic even though I didn't know she was a lesbian at the time? Edit: oh, had forgotten about Mauresmo...that's a good one, LazyD.

Most guys just think big, muscular women are unattractive. While I would never make the same comment that guy did, I fall into that category: fit and toned is attractive to me, big/bodybuilder not at all, especially when that women also starts looking like a man. The Williams sisters, IMO, have always fallen more towards the latter category. I would not be surprised if they have used steroids at one time or another.

BTW, lest one think me homophobic or racist, there are several lesbians I think are neither scary nor unattractive. And there are several women with dark skin (I don't say African-American because some are not US-born nor reside in the U.S.) who I think are very beautiful women and not scary in the least bit.

Okay they're sisters, but other than that, what is it that causes people to group Venus and Serena together as both being scary and ugly? They don't have similar body types. Serena is shorter, thicker and muscular, whereas Venus is taller, thinner and lean. Venus is much more similar in body type to Sharapova than she is to Serena.

Everyone is missing the point. This is about gender fluidity. They were just referred to in a gender-fluid way that is completely fine, as gender doesn't really exist.

How is calling someone scary a racist statement? Is it because they're black? That's a serious question. If they happened to be Hispanic, or Asian, would it still be racist in your opinion?

Its not "how" and "someone", it's the cultural memes surrounding us and this particular person with no history of violence.

The point is that if the Williams sisters were Hispanic, they wouldn't have been described as scary.

Disagree.

At least it seems as though you're implying that any insult against a person of color, regardless of the reason, is racist simply because they are a person of color.

Some insults tap into racist cultural memes, like the scary black person. Others don't.

Are you implying that no Hispanic person has been called scary by a non-Hispanic person?

I bet if you look on the underside of your post you'll see a bunch of purple lines, because this is a huge ****ing stretch.

I honestly think there are times you too hard. I don't doubt you are a great dude looking to better the world, and I usually see your point of view, even if I don't always agree. But to me, this time, it's just too much of a stretch.

Like WAY too much.

I don't buy it. It is entirely possible that the guy meant it in a racist way, but there is nothing inherently racist about the statement. I don't recall a stereotype of black people having a scary face. If that exists, then I've never heard of it. The hateful misconception that I do know, is of black people being scary because they are violent/criminal. I think it requires too long a reach for that position to be worth defending.

some "Open" or another...

I think it's Serena but I'm not really paying enough attention...

I'm too absorbed in the drama at my fingertips...

:-)

At least Serena has curves to balance the linebacker build out. She's not that bad. She's no Sorana Cristea though....that's for sure.

Glad to see this thread met my expectations: a bunch of (presumably white) folks delegating the meaning of race to One Brow. Can we somehow merge all threads of this sort?
