Love this thread. Big Gobert believer right here. That said, Mark Eaton had over 3000 blocked shots for the Jazz in his career. Gobert's total is 59. Most would say that Gobert's greatest impact as a player will be his blocked shots, (not necessarily true) seems he has a ways to go. Reading this thread is sometimes exquisitely painful by re-numerating all the Jazz centers of the past. Such fun. Pain is a Jazz fans lot in life right now.

Ike Austin is the one rare case where a center started his career with the Jazz THEN went on to be pretty good. A second round pick from Tempe Normal School (who just got laid low by the University of Arizona) Austin joined the Jazz in 1991 and played 2 seasons. Not doing much he went to Europe and played before returning to the NBA for the Miami Heat in 1997 and played really, really well netting the award for the most improved player. After a couple of good seasons, Austin entered free agency where he spurned the Jazz and best friend Karl Malone to sign with Orlando (Jazz were capped out.) He then went on to disappear and was traded several times before leaving the League.
Later, in 2004, he went on to become Owner-Coach of the Utah Snowbears in the ABA. They went 27-1 and dominated the league heading into the playoffs. For some reason, Austin feuded with league officials and quit the league, forfeiting all remaining games.

And, Ladies and Gentlemen, with that entry Rudy Gobert has contributed more than half of the players who have ever suited up for the Utah Jazz at center. Rudy Gobert is above the mean. As I mentioned before, this is good for Rudy, but man, what a load of stiffs we have had at center. . .
Go to any NBA team, find their 29th best center over the last 40 years. I bet you don't find much difference from Ike Austin.

I can accept that. However we are talking the rookie Ike Austin pre stint in Europe, not the Ike Austin who won MIP and got a big contract.

And for those religiously following the thread, we are now caught up to Gobert's actual position in Jazz Center History. In order to pass John freakin' Amaechi, Gobert needs a combination of points, rebounds, blocks, steals, and assists to total more than 47 in the next few games.

Second, a very small technicality. It's median, not mean.

You are correct.
Fair enough. But you are comparing Austin to Boston's ~34 year old washed up Jason Collins in 2012, averaging < 1.6 rpg and 1.2 ppg -- Boston's roughly median career center.
