Utah's Alec Burks will not need immediate shoulder surgery

Keeping fingers crossed. It was "bad" luck like this that started the Spurs' dynasty. They had some decent players, but injuries gave them the worst record in the very year Duncan entered the draft. Now it's unlikely Utah finishes with the worst record (Philly should have that locked up). Just imagine if the Jazz could get Towns or Okafor. WOW! And Philly may decide to go with Mudiay since they already have Noel and Embiid. So perhaps a top-3 pick gives Utah one of those bigs. Hey, even drafting Mudiay wouldn't be a disaster.

Sucks about Alec, but it does help Hood establish himself, maybe even as a starter, with Alec easing back into the lineup next season as the 6th man.

They will draft whichever one gets injured.

If it's 2 weeks, I'm sure it will turn into three. The 19th falls in the middle of the road trip. Better to wait until after Christmas when he'll have time to practice with the team. Another week to heal, and he'd come back at home vs. Philadelphia on Dec. 27th.

Looks like Alec is coming back, and will not need surgery. I guess he could still decide to go that route, but it's positive for his return.

And better....Jody Genessy @DJJazzyJody
More Jazz news: Source tells me it's "very possible" Utah will re-acquire Andrei Kirilenko in exchange for Jeremy Evans and Toure' Murry.

Now if sources would just report seeing Matt Harpring working out at ZBBC life would be complete.

Then trade Burke for D Will and Kanter for Boozer and then we go get Boom Bitches from Minny or wherever he is.. #dynasty

If his shoulder has been a problem since before he entered the league and it's getting worse then I see no reason why he should NOT get surgery.

If there's any chance that delaying the surgey will put him out of action next year, then they should do it right away and focus on rehab this year and playing next year.

If there's little chance of waiting causing him to miss time next year, then I'm totally fine with him trying to go.

Just don't sacrifice future playing time at $10 million per year in favor of current playing time (in a throw-away season) at the much lower cost of $3 million this season.

Whatever gets Burks' shoulder closest to 100% is what I'm about. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me to continue kicking the can in a season that the Jazz should start to consider not being mad that they lose a lot of games in.

Really? It's been a problem since college? If that's the case the Jazz were idiots to give him an extension.

Burks should probably just get the surgery.

Good on his agent. Got him the big extension. If Burks hadn't signed and this injury happened, it would have probably decrease his contract. Our overpay just got more overpaid.

Our weak depth gets weaker.

And our strong tank gets stronger.

Always hindsight on injuries. However, if it isn't season-ending and he returns after Christmas, I doubt the injury will have any effect on what he would have been offered as a FA. It's not a major injury; he should recover fully. Only caveat would be if it IS true that his shoulder has been bothering him since college (first I heard of that was Numberica's post). Then you have to wonder about a chronic condition that could continue to cause problems.

DL is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. MOst everyone thought Hayward's value would be $10M or so. Some even said $8M and the high was around $12M, IIRC. SO DL waits and Utah has to match a max offer to keep him. Now some are saying the Burks contract is a big overpay. Of course, we'll never know. With the cap going up significantly, I think the next round of salaries for SG's will make Burks contract seem about right.

never heard of any shoulder problem.

I know he never missed a game in his first two years for anything.

Last year he missed a couple for a minor ankle sprain.

never heard of a shoulder issue before now
