Realistic expectations for Exum, our future star

I have to agree his Dev. I think Penny is the best comparison that we can have at the moment. 6'6" pass first point with a great first step. Now I would chance saying that Dante has potentially a higher ceiling then Penny. Dante has court vision that you just dont find with players his age. His passing ability is going to be what sepperates him from the rest of his peers.

Also Dante seems to be far more focused on the defensive end then Penny ever was. I also like what I see from him on the boards. Although a string bean has more girth to it then what Dante has on his frame he still finds away to battle for a few boards every game.

Once he growns into his frame we could see a legit stat line like: 16ppg, 11ast, 6rbds, 2stls, 1blk. I dont expect Dante to ever become a legit scoring threat like Kobe but a pass first point gaurd that keeps his defender honest and the rest of the team worried about getting punked with a magician like pass.

I see All-Star potential in Dante and I like the way that the Jazz are easying him into the league. He is not physicaly ready to play 25+ mins. The last thing we want is a major injury to occur that takes away some of his natural athletic gifts like what happened to Penny because of a lack of muscle mass to protect him.

Don't see the 11 assists. Quin's offense relies on ball movement, not one guy running the offense. 11 assists would lead the entire league. I'd be happy with Exum at 14/7/4 on the offensive end and being a stud defender on the other end.

14 and 7 is what trey will get. Exum better get somewhere around 20 points and 9 assists with steals and rebounds too, or he will not be the superstar we are hoping for.

actually neither you presumptuous tool

kobe was stuck behind Eddie Jones his first few years yes ?

Somewhat, Kobe was also stuck being a 19 year old in the NBA just like Exum. The let Jones run the offense giving Kobe time to watch, learn, play, develop, make mistakes, learn from mistakes etc. It was the perfect set up for a 19 year old Kobe Bryant coming into the NBA.

Most NBA players spend 3 years in college before entering the NBA. They come in the league at 21-22 years old and their only basketball experience is playing against other college kids and 90+% of them are not even good enough for the NBA. Exum is skipping the college ball and will be spending his learning years playing against a 10-12 man roster of NBA players. In the NBA at 19 years old, everybody's got game. By the time he is 22 years old he is going to be very advanced already clocking 3 years of minutes against the greatest players in the world. Not every young NBA player makes it out with success, but Exum has a very good chance of being a very good PG in this league. He is already showing a good outcome at his very young age. You can't expect a 19 year olds numbers to be up there with the elite rookies. He's getting 5-7 ppg, and most importantly, his turnovers are very low considering his inexperience. AGAIN 19 years old.

Enough with this excuse. Here is every 19-and-under player-season dating back to 1990:

Xavier Henry, Dorell Wright, and Rashard Lewis are the best of the worst down at the bottom of the list... with Exum.

Not worried about the numbers in the least. There's lots of variables here. I've seen a combination of length and quickness that just doesn't come around very often, and flashes of brilliance that suggest he could become an incredibly special player. Obviously there's no guarantee he'll develop to his full potential, but he's exactly the kind of player you gamble on at #5. I'm still completely tickled that he not only fell to us, but that we were willing to swing for the fences rather than settling for the Chris Humphries and Kirk Snyders of the world, just because they seem like the safe pick. ****ing GREAT pick.

Anyone see Smart last night? Insane talent on both sides

That's the worst part. Low TO means he isn't trying anything outside of what he is comfortable with. He needs to try and force somethings so he can see what works and what doesn't work. Right now it's just swing passes, dribble around aimlessly through picks while realizing no one is guarding him, pass it to someone else who isn't open because the floor spacing sucks and Exum doesn't need to be guarded by anyone. Maybe have the occasional game where he hits some wide open spot-up 3's.

Seriously, you do realise he isn't trying anything outside of what he's being asked to do ? If you think he's dribbling up court and passing off to just get rid of the ball then you're on drugs. He's sticking to what is being instructed and the plays called. I'm as frustrated as anyone as him not utilizing his gifts, but here's an idea ... how about the dumbass coach does something creative like call a clearout for him and tell him to take it one on one ? Or clears a side and put him in a pick and roll with anyone who isn't a big spaz offensively ??
It's excruciating watching some of the "passing game" that has no purpose and results in clogged spacing and nobody with any idea of what they're doing except Hayward. We suck and at this point i put a lot of it down to the style of game being played.
