What's new

BasketballInsiders: Rudy Gobert is Ahead of Schedule

We have our starting front court set with Gobert, Favors and Hayward.
We have, imo, an ideal 6th man (not a slight at all) in Burks.
We have a good coach and supporting staff

Things Utah needs:
Improved bench - easily fixable thru trades and offseason (especially if Booker, Burks and Hood, who is hopefully our bench shooter, are on that bench)
Need Exum to fulfill his potential at the PG position. Utah has had horrible PG play for the last 3 seasons.
Need an elite shooter on the wing that can play D, preferabbly at the SG position.

My biggest question is what assets do the Jazz still have to help acquire these missing pieces.

I said it in the draft thread but draft devin booker then trade Burke for a mid first and draft Justin Anderson.

move burks to the back up pg position because snyders offense doesnt need a traditional pg. either start Anderson for 3 and d or booker for scoring

exum, burks
booker, Anderson
Hayward, hood
favors, booker
Gobert, kanter (at a reasonable rate if not then a cheaper center or even tomic)

that team is ubber balanced. with scoring, shooting and defense. jazz would have to tank to make it happen.

I'd like to see that but am much more interested in the jump hook. I saw him shoot a couple of those with the left hand against Brooklyn I think, so he is clearly working on it. If he can shoot that right or left handed I think it would be almost impossible to defend.

My thoughts exactly. Give the kid a few low post moves, nothing crazy or Olajuwon-ish, just some solid moves like a good drop-step or a baseline spin, and add a jump hook, and his offensive production will jump 50% easy.

That is another way of saying what I said. Note that I excluded Kanter and Burke in my scenario. So you have 3-4 new bench guys...

Fair enough, but I think the bench is good even if we added no one. If the only thing we need to 'fix' the bench is draft picks then it's probably not even worth mentioning, because of course draft picks will be added every year.

Bring back Korver (or get someone similar). That 3 pt threat would be great with the front court we have.

How would Harrison Barnes fit into this role? Probably better defensive potential and one of the leaders in 3pt% this season I think (granted he gets crazy open looks playing on GSW). He's coming into RFA soon I think

IMO what we are missing is an elite offensive option, we need that elite scorer.
We need someone who could go off for 30 any given night.
Someone like Monta Ellis is for the Mavs.

Really doe, in quins offense im not sure we need this type of player. I think he wants ball movement, obvious unselfishness, and very balanced scoring. I look at the current atl hawks. They don't have any truly elite scorers or superstars. Lots of guys that can play and fit in together. (This is why kanter must go, he does not really fit in)

If we see improvement from Burks, Hayward, gobert, favors, exum, trey, hood, ingles, etc and improvement from snyder + a few more good players in the draft that fit the system then we might have pretty much all we need

He did a baseline spin move in his first summer league and looked good. Blew my mind. Have not seen it since but its in there.

How about a Kareem sky hook? No one shoots that shot anymore.

I also think the Jazz are pretty deep now, but still need that first option. Unfortunately that's the hardest piece to get. Maybe they'll luck out and Exum will be it, but a James Harden type would be just what the doctor ordered here.

We could be like the Hawks we are just missing a Teague, a Horford, and a Korver.

:^O

If that's what Quin wants than Burke is a goner.

Edit: And you know i'm right next to you on dat Burks train. But WTF happened this year? Decided he was a good a shooter as Curry and he was driving to the basket like freakin Exum. Not as excited about Burks anymore, tbh.

I think with the draft and making Burks the 6th man our bench will be average to good. But is that enough? Don't we want a legitimate championship contender? If so than while I like the guys the Jazz have on the bench I am not sure they have the right talent mix to get the Jazz to that title. Woefully short on shooters and a decent backup PG and C are needed as I think Burke and Kanter are gone. Ingles is a good hustle and glue guy and Booker could be the backup PF and Burks the 6th man. They need a PG, C and shooter.

So I sitll say that the Jazz need

Back up C
Exum to fullfill is potential as starting PG
Backup PG
Starting SG who can shoot well enough to free Hayward and defend
3 and D guy off the bench

Gobert/Backup C
Favors/Booker
Hayward/3&D/Ingles
SG shooter/Burks/Hood
Exum/back up PG

Could Hood develop into that SG shooter?

I wonder how bad Lawson wants out of Denver. I'll give ya Kanter and Exum for him.

Idk why I said this. I just want a PG who knows how to drive to the basket and pass the ball.
