I don't think so, Catch. They're rebuilding and "not skipping steps" but they're not outright tanking - as was clearly the case last year.
I think the belief of the Jazz is that they have potential superstars in Gobert and Exum, and very, very nice players in Hayward and Favors. As such, they want to maximize the development of those players and see if they're truly destined to make the leap to stars, while keeping as much flexibility as possible so that when the developmental leap DOES happen, that they can bolster their roster with a strong supporting cast that can make a playoff run.
They weren't willing to pay Kanter what he wanted, thought he was impeding the development of Gobert and Favors, and didn't think that based on everything they'd seen that Enes had the same potential as Favors/Gobert.
Had we not done the deal, everyone who is currently complaining about what we got back would be pissed at the end of the season when we didn't match Kanter and got "nothing back."
