So I had started my latest review for "Best Bang for Your Buck at the Utah State Liquor Store" and it got deleted. So now I'm pissed and you're going to get the condensed version.
Bottom line, Mickey's Ice, $1.99 for a 24oz can with 5.8%abv. That's 0.7oz of ethanol per dollar, putting it pretty far behind Icehouse Edge which came in at 0.77oz of ethanol per dollar.
This is the worst tasting of the "Ice" beers. It's kind of what I was expecting from all of them but so far most have been better than expected. Not that I'm saying any of them are terrific beers, but if you can't manage to drink them because they taste so horrible to you you're being silly.
I originally passed on this because I wasn't going to include any "malt liquor" beers. But turns out this is not one of those.
Anyway, if you're at the liquor store trying to decide if you want a 24oz can of something cheap pay the extra $0.50 for the Icehouse Edge. It tastes better and has more ethanol per dollar.
To contrast these cheap beers with a local favorite, Hop Rising from Squatters is a 9%abv beer in either a 12oz bottle, 12oz can or 25oz bottle. The 12oz versions cost $1.89 (and they are a slightly better deal than the 25oz bottle, go figure) and come in at 0.57oz of ethanol per dollar. Of course, with Hop Rising you're getting a pretty good imperial IPA from a local brewery, so I'd say it's money well spent. But it doesn't compare on a dollar per oz of ethanol test.
