What's new

Tibor Pleiss

Isn't Ingles being interviewed frequently on 1280 these days? Since he and Tomic were teammate for a year, they ought to ask him for his opinion of Tomic, as a player/teammate/likelihood of NBA interest/etc. Tomic is only half a year older than Ingles, having turned 28 this past week.

Was just about to post something similar. His age isn't as big of a factor as some might think. Hasn't stopped Jingles from stepping in and contributing. I could see a similar situation for Tomic. But the Jazz have to want him.

KOC didn't in 2012, with a full front court of Jefferson, Millsap, Favors, Kanter and Evans. Plus I'm not sure Tomic was a good fit for Corbin's schemes (if you want to classify them as such), while he seems like a great fit for Snyder's system and philosophy, he'd only Gobert and Favors above him and the Jazz would have to pay him more based on his play for Barcelona over the past 3 years.

I have a feeling if the Jazz were confident Tomic was going to ever come over, then they don't trade for Pleiss. Tomic is obviously better, but I highly doubt he'll ever be here.

That could very well be the case. But I can also imagine a scenario in which the Jazz's first choice from OKC would have been Abrines -- Pleiss may have just been the consolation prize. It seems that it's not really too hard to find someone (free agency, low level trade) for what Pleiss is likely to bring -- semi-skilled banging/size without much passing. Though Tomic may be at least as questionable defensively as Pleiss, at least he brings clear high-quality offensive skills.

I think Tomic has developed into a better post defender than he gets credit for. He put on good weight to hold up against stronger players and he works hard down low. His team defense is decent. I'd like to see how he fits into the Jazz system. Think he'd be just fine, plus he's a skilled offensive player.

If Abrines was our top choice and we didn't get him, then DL is a moron. OKC isn't going to buckle down and say no to Enes Kanter because of Abrines.

hmmmm....what is the opportunity cost of bringing over Tomic or Pleiss? So much for having a ton of money to get a top FA this offseason if we do.

Again, you may be right that Pleiss was the choice over Abrines and that it may be connected to the low likelihood of persuading Tomic. And maybe DL thinks Pleiss has more in him than he's shown this year.

But if I'm making the trade and prioritizing between Abrines and Pleiss, I'm choosing Abrines. I think the likelihood that he offers a high-level NBA skill is higher than Pleiss. He's also younger. I think what Pleiss offers is not that hard to pick up for a decent price on the open market. Might be a little harder to say that about Abrines.

Who would you choose?

Great point. I wouldn't offer Pleiss more than 2-3 million. I'd guess 2-3 million more for Tomic. And that could be a big deal. Might be better ways to spend the money.

Oh I would have chosen Abrines, but I also think we got royally screwed on the whole trads. That trade certainly did not give me more confidence in DL.

Full MLE is $5,000,000 per year for 3 years. That's exactly what I would offer Tomic. Plus the opportunity to make a LOT more money in three years as an NBA restricted free agent at the age of 31.

The big problem with this is that the Jazz won't have the full MLE if they're operating below the salary cap at the beginning of the 2015/2016 offseason. The simple solution to this is to sign veteran bench players now to 1 year contracts with unguaranteed team options for next year - just like Trevor Booker. It effectively eats up the cap space, gives them contracts they can use in deals to acquire players through sign and trades AND allows them to keep their MLE to use on Tomic if they manage to fill out the rest of the roster with FAs and draft picks before they make his signing official.

Wasn't a big fan of the return either, even though the trade may have been for the best, given the circumstances.

Wish we could know what was on the table. OKC clearly was weighing Lopez vs. Kanter (along with the rest of the pieces). DL must have had a backup for Kanter, with the hints that have been thrown around that they decided a while ago that Kanter was on his way out.

Edit: meant this as a reply to Hantlers's last post above.
