Anyone ever try raising money this way for selfish purposes or know someone who has?

I'm considering trying to raise 10 grand. Maybe even 15-20.

actually I know a couple people who have used this type of thing to raise money for independent film and photography projects

but in both cases, the way it worked was they had a specific dollar amount and time frame as a goal, and the donations were not actually processed if the required amount was not raised within the specified time limit

not sure if those would be selfish purposes or not...

you have to be a little bit creative here, QSH, or nobody's gonna give you anything

Mrs. Jantzen suspects the loan could have been taken out to support her husband's gambling problem, an issue she believes resulted from a traumatic childhood in Europe during the Second World War. Mrs. Jantzen believes that her husband had post-traumatic stress disorder.

Is struggling to get funded for her dead husband's gambling debt loan.....I don't know that people are going to take to paying off your gambling debts.

My Bishop just had a heart attack and they found a tear in his aorta. They call it "The Widowmaker". He had a week long stay in ICU while they were deciding whether or not he needed open heart surgery. Knowing he was going to have major medical bills regardless, some friends started a gofundme account with the goal of raising $5000. They ended up with something like $6200 in a month. So it works, but I think you've got to have the right story/reason.

Something prolific in general will get donations. Remember the poorly treated pizza delivery guy? People gave him an absurd amount of money in my opinion.

EDIT: Obviously the pizza delivery guy one wasn't selfish since someone who saw the viral video started the fundraiser, but it does fall under the category of stupid fundraisers that many stupid people contributed a lot of money to.
