Woj on Utah on the Russillo Show

I actually got the feeling that he gets the NBA, from the cap, to the players, to the management. He was very deliberate with good guests and asked great questions. Usually ESPN guys, when they actually get a guest I want to listen to, will ask them idiot questions about their personal lives or about the damn Knicks.

Russillo isn't like most ESPN on air personalities which is why he's not talked about.

His best role is PF. He has stated this time and again, that he doesn't like playing center.

Put whatever label on it you want. He is a roll man in the pick in roll... Rudy handles that now and is really good at it. It is pretty crowded for them unfortunately.

I'm fine with keeping him, but think he could get more minutes and find more opportunity with another team.

Favors has a decent jumper and good low post moves, something Rudy still has not developed, and in fact, before his injuries was talking about developing a 3-point shot.

you're dreaming. He's an UFA after next season. Please tell me how we recoup good value. Please.

The return on his regaining his value is greater than whatever pittance you can get for him now in a trade.
Risk/reward. Favors getting back to his old self > possibly not getting 30 cents on the dollar him now.

nice boilerplate. What you said, though, actually means very little. We may be able to get a late first round pick for him. That's not going to change even if he goes gangbusters for the first 20 games of next year.

And we aren't going to re-sign him, so let's not go there.

I'm actually fine with playing him through next year and just letting him walk. But I feel that way because I think we are shopping for a bridge-option at PF right now, and Favs could be that bridge, I guess.

Ok. I'm open to resigning him, but that's me.
But if you can get a good return, of course, you trade him. I'm not against that. I just don't think you can get as much as you think. I dunno if Favs is still happy here after the FO has fawned all over Hayward's junk, but I like Favs. I'd like him to stick around if possible.

I'm with you on this one. I don't think Favors value to the league is anywhere near fair return and would rather see him play it out.

Driving around between appointments at work today, I caught the Woj segment on ESPN radio talking about the Hayward ordeal. Interestingly, he spent most of the segment talking about Utah. His take is that Utah is blameless for what happened. He went into detail about that outside of the actual Spurs, no there team comes as close to their developmental and sound business strategy as the Utah Jazz. From coaching to staff to ownership, Utah is a model organization, and is set up pretty well for now and the future. They will always maximize whatever personnel are added to the team, and that reputation will continue to grow.

What Utah does not do well is marketing players on a National level. Excuse me for saying, but Hayward is a white, good looking All Star from middle America. He should have national exposure; national ads. He should be high in jersey sales. He should have fans buying his sneakers everywhere.

Karl Malone was a 2-time MVP and barely had any national ads. Stockton had one, maybe. D-Will had none. The issue is not that the Jazz are a small market team, the issue is that they behave like one. Not saying Hayward is Durant, Westbrook, or Duncan, but from small markets those players became national and international stars. I think OKC and San Antonio invest in their players becomes names outside the city and state in ways Utah doesn't.

Whether it is Nike or the team, the Jazz NEED to do a better job of marketing their most marketable and best players. If Hayward had the potential to be a household, national name in Utah, I think he would have stayed. It is not just about basketball. That is a big reason why he probably went to Boston. It is about life beyond basketball and Utah does not do a good job of promoting players that way. Never have, but I hope they finally will.

Woj loves the Jazz. Lindsey and Quin have both been on his podcast. You definitely don't to get on his bad side because he'll write hit pieces about your team and leak stuff that you don't want leaked. He's been brutal to the Kings the last couple years lol.

I really have a tough time imagining a Rubio/Favors/Gobert lineup working. And I don't see any of them coming off the bench either (assuming Favors is healthy for the first time in however many years).

And Utah isn't getting Rudy Gay below the MLE. Otherwise, he could go to a more legit team at that price.

Gay on a JJ-easque deal sounds like a very good gamble to me. Provided the Jazz get a better medical staff, that is.

He does have a decent jumper. Good enough to hit wide open, not serious enough to commit guarding.

He is serviceable in the post. Unfortunately, spacing is nearly as important as skill in the post (which the Jazz will be seriously lacking for much of the time Favors is on the court) and it's just inefficient/bad basketball most of the time.

Having both he and Gobert on the floor is a net negative offensively.

Should have listened to a Haywards agent. He told the whole story. I know it could all be BS, but he sounded very sincere and it makes sense. I want him to be telling the truth and if he is it makes it harder to hate Hayward.

Gobert demands a lot of space when he is in the pick and roll. It really opens up the court and it helps when you have a big playing that can hit the open jump shot or be open to a pass while cutting to the rim with power. Gobert and Favor's played great together when healthy, I'm not sure why that would change. This was when we had nothing at PG. They played well together with burner Burkes and rookie Exum at the point. Why couldn't they play together with a great passing PG who sets players up well? People really over rate being able to get the 3 point shot. There are other ways to space the court. We can't beat GS at their game night as well play ours. I would like a 3 point shooting pf to give us options but that doesn't mean Gobert and Favor's can't work. Besides Favor's said he knows he needs to add a three point shot and has been working on it for a little while. He keeps moving his shot outward.

I wouldn't worry too much about scoring next season. Ricky Rubio is a blessing in disguise when rebuilding isn't an option and retooling/development is the course. He can shoulder a lot of playmaking and he's created scoring opportunities for teammates on Minnesota teams with worse spacing.
Ricky + 2 out of Hood/Ingles/Mitchell + Favors/Joe + Rudy is pretty potent. When Faves and Rudy share the court, he'll need to use his magic and create tiny windows by deceiving defenders, but with Joe keeping the lane clean, it'll be a pretty smooth situation.
