Roster Addition Wish List

i absolutely love all of these "master plans" these teams have. they didnt pan out last year and they won't this year. maybe durant, but i
doubt Kawhi. which means we could definitely get Harris. although i doubt Jerry west is that dumb

I don't think the Clippers get KD and Kawhi. I think Tobias will stay there unless the Clippers go on some massive losing streak.

The trade target for us could be Gallinari if the Clippers can actually lure a big free agent to join Harris but want the cap room/starting spot that Gallinari occupies.

they might trade Gallo in season if they could get expiring contracts... he's always one injury away from being tough to trade.

The scenario where we get Harris is this... they court Kawhi and KD and it takes a week or so and they still "have a chance". We get in Harris' ear and say "why the hell you waiting for them? We will max you now and you are our first choice... why go back to a team that thinks you are a 3rd or 4th choice? Also, remember when they signed Blake and traded him 5 minutes later... we never trade players ever."

If Clips find out early they are on the outs with one of those guys that opportunity vanishes.

If we are talking about the summer, my PF priorities go as follows (and these are in the realm of reality so no KD, Kawhi, etc.):

#1 - Tobias - very unlikely, but possible
#2 - Randle - if we are willing to pay a bunch, we can be in the hunt. I have a bad feeling he is going to go to hometown Dallas and they are going to be really, really good soon.
#3 - Mirotic - I have my concerns, but I'd love to have him at Favors money or less.

The big FA acquisitions like they are pulling off require serious player relationships and/or hardcore recruiting. LBJ and Bosh went because Wade had a great relationship and recruited him. KD was being recruited the second the finals ended by Draymond... Who do the Clips have? You can hire all the front office geniuses you want... it helps but is not nearly as important as the player recruitment.

Niko will get 25M per year so long as there are no significant injuries. In the higher tiers of FA there will be no value signings this year.

Unless the Jazz really can't turn it around, which I doubt, I can't imagine they'd offer Niko, Randle, Tobias near max money. They'll pick up Favors option and try to land a bigger player next offseason, which is the absolute right move.

I think people are selling the Mitch/Gobert and co duo short on their ability to recruit somebody. It's all about winning now, less about market.

I think Tobias is worth the max because of fit, age, and he's just damn good. The other guys aren't worth the max. I could see us rolling it forward a year too.

The other side is NO or the Clips may re-sign those guys and if things don't work look to off load the contracts for expirings and minor assets.

Jazzfanz will melt if we make no changes and miss our FA targets and run back with the current guys.

Can DM/Tobias/Gobert win a chip? Tobias is fine, I'd almost rather go for the Spurs-esque deep team route than lock in our team that way.

Spurs didn't do a "deep team route" though.
They had a big three hall of fame group with possibly the greatest pf of all time combined with maybe the greatest coach of all time.

About the only team that went the deep team route was the billups, sheed, Ben Wallace, rip team.

Starpower is almost always the way is has to be done. The Spurs had hella starpower.

Gobert has still 2 years of contract after this season.
The Jazz have to do everything in order to keep Gobert happy hoping that he will sign another contract with the Jazz.

DL can't play with time anymore. The Jazz have to be nearly a contender next season, it is necessary to maximize the last 2 years of Rudy's contract.

It is time for the Jazz to spend money.

I may already hate myself for this suggestion... but rumor is Houston want to offload Brandon Knight and a 1st for KCP. If it was a real first (not so heavily protected it will never convey) I'd consider it.

Brandon has lost the last two years (basically) to injury. He may never be the player he was before... but the idea of Brandon Knight is kind of what I'd put next to DM. He had some flaws, but showed some real promise on his rookie deal. He seems like an intelligent kid. His physical profile reminds me of George Hill.

He just made his G League injury start and looked solid. Numbers are just okay, but didn't look like a ton of rust.

There is significant risk that he can never stay healthy.
There is some risk he won't be what he was or develop further.

BUT..... He could have just been unlucky. He could be like Gallo pre-season where they likely would have given assets to get off his money and now he's healthy. $15M is the price of a first anyway... getting some production would be bonus.

We aren't the types to take that kind of gamble though... We won't give up our cap dreams for BK. This isn't a real idea in that sense... more of a what if. I'm still slightly intrigued by Brandon Knight... I also hate myself a little.

Sure but guys like Tobias didn't eat up the majority of the cap space allowing them to fill roster out better top to bottom.

They had star power and were deep in a sense that they'd take no-name guys that had a skill and they'd turn them into contributors.

Pistons are probably the best championship level deep team to compare to... Dallas had Dirk and solid players. There is a chance DM can be a superstar and Rudy functions as a superstar imo because he doesn't need the ball much to have a huge impression on the game... which allows for guys that aren't quite superstars with the ball to have a superstar impact.

If the only way to win a champioship is the big superstars teaming up then most the league is screwed (us included).

Maybe... depends on what else they have. Winning a championship is really hard. Moves can't be made with just a championship in mind. I think you have to give yourself a chance to be in the conference semis and you need some luck from there. I don't think we are completely locked in there. We have to hit a home run or two in the draft or with other minor additions.

Like GS... was adding Iggy in FA what made them a championship team at the time? No - that in combo with Steph/Klay developing... adding Bogut and Green turning into DPOY did... but Iggy was key. Getting cheap contributions from Barnes and vet min guys helped as well.

Tobias would be just one piece to that puzzle imo... if you can add a piece for just cap space you do it (especially because our cap space isn't that valuable on the FA market).

He's also a guy that just keeps getting better... he's a worker.

Yep.

Here are my predictions:

AD gets traded to the Lakers unless Boston is dumb enough to trade Tatum

KD goes to NY - just seems like the type move a guy like him can make and not be bashed. If he stays in GS, screw that guy forever. If he goes to NY, he could popular again and actually win. KD, Porzingis and a very high draft pick could be amazing.

Kawhi goes to the Lakers or Clippers - seems like the writing has been on the wall for this one for a while.

Tobias stays with the Clippers

Randle goes to Dallas for big money

Kyrie stays

Butler stays

Klay stays

Middleton stays

Mirotic stays

Kemba - I don't really know. Seems like the type guy who might sign for less to win a title in LA.

Land a bigger player next offseason? Like who? We have to remember this is still Utah we're talking about. The biggest fee agents we've landed are Boozer, Memo and Joe Johnson. Booz and Memo were still young, unproven players when we signed them and we had to overpay to get them to sign here. Lucky for us they developed extremely well and lived up to their contracts, and possibly even out performed them. As for Johnson, he was well past his prime when he signed here. Were he still in his prime we wouldn't of had a snowballs chance in hell at landing him.

Tobias is absolutely worth the max. Niko and Randle are not, but in order to land them or players at their level we are going to have to overpay and hope that it works out as well as it did with Boozer and Okur.

I agree 100%. Tobias has come soooo far, and he'd be an amazing fit. If Durant leaves, the path opens again. If we add him and keep a chunk of our depth,
we can hang with anyone.

Niko will get 25M per year so long as there are no significant injuries. In the higher tiers of FA there will be no value signings this year.

If Nico gets $25, he is immediately the next Ryan Anderson. I wouldn't pay that at all. An injury prone defensively limited PF shooter like Nico is not worth 24% of our cap.

Well, they have Jerry West. There's no way the big names aren't considering that. Cap space and some good pieces
help too.

I dunno. The only superteams that have successfully formed via Free Agency were the Heatles and Durant.
And GS got lucky with the cap spike. I just wouldn't count on it happening. I'd just prepare to maximize the opportunity.
Beyond Kawhi, I'd target Harris as top priority, even with his price tag.
