2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

To the people who are anti-Porter and anti-Conley, would it change your mind if you knew Utah could both?

It would take Rubio/Favors/Thabo/Exum/Allen/2 1st

I'm on record as saying I'm on board with going after both. With both of them, I think we can beat Golden State if everybody is healthy and we get some breaks.

I would add though, I don't think we should have to give up a 1st rounder for both deals. There is just not that big of a market for PG's right now. And if you consider that we would be using 3 quality players/assets in Exum, Rubio, and Favors to make these deals, one of those deals doesn't deserve a first from us.

Financial Breakdown if we got Porter and Conley for Favors, Rubio, Exum, Thabo and a pick:

The Salary Cap for 2019-20 will be $109 million (up $7 million from this year). The luxury tax will be $134 million (up $8 million from this year). https://sports.yahoo.com/report-nba-sets-salary-cap-2019-20-2020-21-seasons-020033583.html

For 2019-20, we would have the following contracts:
Conley $32.5
Porter $27.3
Gobert $25
Ingles $12
Crowder $7.8
Korver $7.5*
Mitchell $3.6
Allen $2.5
Bradley $2
Neto $2 (team option)
O'Neale $1.6 (team option)
Niang $1.5 (team option)
TOTAL: $125.3 million on 12 players (if we picked up all team options)
*Korver has an early termination option, but we won't pay to make Korver walk
Udoh $4.4 cap hold

If we could find a way to include Bradley, Allen, or Niang in one of these Porter/Conley deals, we could use our entire MLE $9 on a good player (Rubio, Favors, somebody) and re-sign Udoh and/or Thabo to a vet minimum contract AND still be right under the luxury limit.

Regardless, we would still be under the luxury for next season even when we add the two monster contracts of Porter and Conley. Pretty crazy...

The luxury of having a max player on a rookie contract...

The luxury of having a max player on a rookie contract...

Absolutely.

When you think about it, next year Gobert and Mitchell will combine to make less than $29 million. Chris Paul and Capella will combine to make $55.

We also have crazy valuable deals in Ingles, Crowder, Korver and O'Neale. Combined, they make less than $30 million. Add those to Mitchell and Gobert, and you are looking at the best value 6 players for $60 million in the entire NBA.

Smells delicious, is that championship on the grill?

Deal won't happen though. No way Dennis gives up the golden child, Dante. You hear the way he talks and glows about him?

Thabo and Favors for Porter works, would have to probably include a first in that deal.

Exum and Rubio for Conley works. Is Exum and cap space enough to get this deal done? Would they like Allen added?

This leaves us with

Conley, Neto, Mitchell
Mitchell, O'Neale, Allen
Porter, Ingles, Korver
Crowder, Porter, Niang
Gobert, Udoh, Bradley

I think then the key in the offseason would be to add a Backup C/PF.

The Clippers are monitoring Cousins, Kawhi, Durant and Anthony Davis. Butler mentioned the Clippers as a preferred destination before getting traded to Philly so he might be in play too. https://hoopshype.com/2019/01/25/demarcus-cousins-la-clippers-contract-achilles-recovery/

"Clearing out the entire roster of all but guaranteed money leaves just Danilo Gallinari, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Montrezl Harrell, Jerome Robinson and Lou Williams. That group isn’t a bad starting place.”

Seriously, Favors and a 1st for Tobias Harris just makes too much sense. The Clippers could start advertising 2 spots to free agents.

Yes would. (Though I'm not anti Porter at all and not really anti Conley either though that one makes me nervous)

If we could get both then I would be even more in board.

I'd rather not give up two firsts if we are trying the mega-makeover trade option. Memphis can't expect to get straight expirings and firsts for Conley at this point imo... if they will do Dante and expirings cool.

So the key to me is finding a third team willing to give a first to dump salary and wants Favs. Charlotte is the main one I'd look at. Would they send a first with Bismack to Memphis if we sent Favs. They are in cap hell. Or... Washington could send Ian to Memphis in a mega three team deal instead of getting a first for Otto... they can get Ricky and Favs.

I don't like the idea of sending two firsts and Exum... plus good expiring vets for guys that are considered to be good, but overpaid.

If we trade Favors to get Conley and don't get another player at PF who is an improvement on Favors, then what we are doing makes zero sense.

I want to trade Favors and a pick to get Porter, Harris or even Winslow (highly unlikely but I would still try hard for it). Once we do that, we can look at Conley.

The Nets are deep. I’m not sure it’ll hurt them that much. It’ll certainly hurt the Pacers but they’re too well-coached and have too much other talent to falter.

Perhaps more importantly, simply making the playoffs as a goal, only to be ousted in 4-5 games in the first round, and passing up a smart trade in the process doesn’t seem like a wise move on the Wiz’ part.

The Wizards are not an organization known for their astute planning and dizzying intellect. . .
