I'm Sensing Trading the 1st Round Pick for a Veteran

If it happens here is how I think it will... We go to free agency and don't get Harris... we waive Favors... we move Exum, Korver, Bradley and our 2020 pick (better draft?) for Conley... we make up the delta between the salaries with a good chunk of our space. They save about $17M and can get closer to the salary cap floor, which I assume they will operate near next year. Would leave us with about $16M left to do our other business, as well as the room exception. Likely enough to get one or a couple of guys in the Rudy Gay, Niko, Danny Green, Trevor Ariza, Aminu, Ellington, Jamichael Green... don't think it'd be enough to get Bogdonovic… but you could waive Neto and get to 17M in space... maybe nab him on a 4/75M type deal, but it'd be kind of a funky fit at that point.

I'm still not sure that would be enough. I'm not sure the Grizzlies new GM will have any interest in Exum. I think there's a good chance they would want two first round picks.

I just don't think that deal is out there for them. They will have to take back some money because no one is able to take back that much salary for nothing. Maybe the Lakers after they strike out offer a pick and Ball or something like that. Maybe SA but salary matching is tough there and they have young guys coming up. I just doubt someone is giving two picks unless Grizz take back awful salary.

Some of there stuff depends on if their pick conveys or if they land Zion in the lotto. I think either way they will have major incentive to tank next year.

I get the feeling from what I've seen that Conley trade can't be done prior to the draft. I thought we could just guarantee Favs and then use his salary, but I'm not sure that is how it works.

We can guarantee Favors early, if Favors/Exum works under the trade rules.

If the Griz pick ends up inside the top 8, they keep it which means their 2020 pick likely goes to Boston. If that's the case, they shouldn't trade Conley. There is no incentive to be bad if they don't have their 2020 pick. Trading Conley for expirings and our pick makes zero sense.

Now if the Memphis pick ends up 9th or later, their 2019 pick goes to Boston which means they probably do anything to dump Conley's huge deal so they can go full tank for the 2020 draft. Parsons expires next summer and they would have a clear cap and a high pick and JJJr.

I think they would still have motivation to move Conley... could save $20M each year by cutting salary down to the floor... there is also the issue of getting some future value for him. Unless they get Zion I am of the opinion they will move Conley either way... they can be patient, but they are one injury away from him being untradeable.

Except Conley is the player DL may have been referring to as overpaid and a player to "win the press conference". At 31, he is set to have a Kyle Lowry type scoring dropoff.
who else you going spend that moneynont? Conley mark my words will b e a twenty year NBA vet when all is said and done. A certified no doubt HOFer. Which jazz player is more on the path. Donovan or Gobert?

Lowry at 31 (Conleys current age): 22.4 ppg
32: 16.2 ppg
33: 14.2 ppg

Anyone want to pay Conley 34 million for 14 ppg?

D L has no business calling a player winning the press conference. Maybe he should wake up and look in the mirror because it's not like he is even in the top 10 of NBA gms. #Facts

^No, I think winning the press conference was a reference to Parker.
He was willing to trade for Conley, which he wouldn't have done had he thought Conley was significantly overpaid. Discussions re: Parker didn't even get out of the gate, despite Parker showing some interest for Utah. Could have also been Love, although I don't think trading for him would have "won the press conference."

Can we please stop talking about trading our picks and thinking it is a good idea? We just traded 2 second round picks and Burks for Korver, who is retiring this year. This is not a weak draft despite what Jazz management says. They call almost every draft "weak". There are a lot of teams that are recognizing the value in a 2nd round pick of today. Let alone a 1st round pick. We need to cherish these picks, instead of give them away for nothing. Picks are how a team stays competitive with opportunities.

I agree. The draft may be weak in the sense that apart from a few guys there are no certain stars in the lottery. But there is plenty of value to be had later in the first round. Not to mention the fact how useful it is to have a player that can contribute on a rookie contract.

Pay a veteran role player many millions to provide what a second rounder can give you on the cheap at 10th to 14th on the bench. Makes perfect sense!

If there are "shooters" to be found in this draft then by all means lets find one or two on the cheap and move on! If Korver retires lord knows we are going to need them badly! Every draft has it's hidden "gems" so it's up to us to do our homework and come up with one!

I feel snarky as hell tonight. So I hope the jazz work out another 80 guys just to trade the damn pick one or two years of another has-been veteran who wont stay around. It will be epic.

Korver for 1 year cost the Jazz two seconds.
Rubio for 2 years cost the Jazz Josh Okogie
George Hill for 1 year cost the Jazz Taurean Prince.
Drafting Tony Bradley cost the Jazz Josh Hart and Thomas Bryant
Dumping Tibor Pleiss (the big prize for Enes) cost the Jazz Jonah Bolden and Alpha Kabba
Jazz snagged one second for Trey Burke, a measly prize for a guy they paid 2-firsts to get.

But hey they traded for Mitchell and Rudy so lets forget all the misteps and trade away more cheap young contracts that can stay for 7 years for another player that doesn't like Quin, or Utah, or Lindsey, or the altitude, or Zupas, or whatever he doesn't like so he can up and leave in a year.

Furthermore, I don't drink but tonight I wish I did. Maybe one of yall could come give me hug or something before I rip poor Dennis for something else out of his control. Holy flip, wheres the Tylenol ?
