Roster Building From Here - FA and Summer of 2023

We have cap space though… so don’t have to match.
We can’t just send Sexton/whatever to a team over the cap without taking on a largish contract. The accepting team has to match the incoming salary if they are over the cap or don’t have a sufficiently large TPE (most don’t).

Did the CBA change last night?

We can take back more salary than we send out… as long as we are under the cap… they can’t take sexton without sending someone back though… unless they are under the cap. I would assume a star would have a larger salary than Collin.

I’m talking about trading up in the draft.

EDIT: I thought we were talking about trading up in the draft but the original thought was about a star and I missed that. SO, my point still stands about the draft, it for sure doesn’t matter if it’s for a star.

Ahhh… well we could likely work something around Ochai and trade exceptions. Would have to match salary if trade is on draft night unless they agree to execute later.

I think a trade up in the draft would more likely involve a future pick and one of our current picks.

One "star situation" to keep an eye on is ATL. They've got a lot of turmoil+locker room issues and their new coach has famously struggled to mend those types of issues. ATL is the most mid of mid teams ever. They've been a .500 team since forever (seriously it's a hilarious stats).

Any thoughts on targeting Trae or Dejounte through trade?

DeAndre Hunter

Yuta Watanabe - I think it’s way overdue for Yuta to play for Utah. I was somewhat disappointed that we didn’t go after him last year.

I don't want trae. Probably no to Murray too

I may have to quit if we got Trae. I just hate so much of what he’s about. Murray is a good target… Hunter whatevs. Collins? If he gets his finger fixed maybe but I’d rather just draft Tay Henny.

I think Murray is the only real target there.

My quick thoughts :

Collins is the most untradeable player in the league. I've given up on that idea.

I'd be more open to Trae if he didn't have such bad attitude problems. I think he's really good as a player, but not someone you want leading a team obviously. Absolutely miserable to watch as well with his foul bating. Top 5 worst players to watch in the league easily.

Murray has an extremely weirdo personality, but he's probably not malicious. He's not perfect, but his defense and rebounding are much needed. I agree he's the only real target.

Hunter isn't worth what he will cost in trade.

Just think for a second. You really think having a generationally bad defender share the court with you does not affect your ability to play defense.

Just think.

I'm purely talking about skill and ability. Trae makes life harder on defense for everyone around him, he does not change their actual skill or ability. Playing with or without Trae Young does not change my opinion that Hunter is overrated as a man to man defender who also provides no defensive playmaking. If he was not playing with Trae , I do not think his skill and ability would just suddenly skyrocket.

I kind of like Murray's personality tbh... super cool backstory there. Depends on how the draft goes and if we would have the possibility to extend him (either with a new CBA or through a re-negotiate and extend deal). He'd fit the timeline. I am not sure he is a true AS level pg or if he is just really good and was opportunistic with good usage in SA.

I'd also like that you kind of have a price set on him... like he was just traded for 2 unprotected picks, a heavily protected 1st and a swap. So, one year left feels like an unprotected pick and the Lakers pick would be the range. Like the price shouldn't get out of hand unless there are a few bidders.
