Exit Interviews

The first couple minutes of the Ainge interview I believe pretty well encapsulate my assessment. He talks about how they were going to be drafting second (pre-lottery) and were looking at taking Durant, but then they got bumped back to 5th and it opened the door to trading for Ray Allen and subsequently KG, winning them a championship. He's had a couple times where things have fallen out of the sky that worked favorably, and I believe his approach is to "just be in the right position" for when something falls out of the sky. It can certainly happen, but I think it bends more toward the outlier end of the spectrum rather than somewhere within a normal distribution.
Yeah and in addition, he has trolled reporters over and over about questions regarding "the plan". I'm now 100% sure he genuinely believes that making any long term strategies that you commit to and try to force into reality is not the right way to build a championship team. Instead its minor tinkering and opportunism, paired with being active and vigilant. Take care of your cap, assets and do smart business decissions on the roster.

If that is true then that also essentially means that a deep tank in 2024-25 will only happen if we manage to get kings ransom from Lauri/Sexton.
Also roster upgrades will only happen if A) its the right guy to invest big in or B) if we get good guys on discount prices.

So as fans we have to prepare for everything and expect nothing at the same time. That is THE PLAN.

Ahhh no one listens to him anyways. It’s like what I told my dad who is long winded. When I was young and he caught me doing something stupid he’d spend 5-10 min lecturing me. Well if I talked back. He’d yell at me forever so I just learned to tune him out. Now whenever he’s talking to me in the present after a min or two I only hear whaa whaaa whaaaaa.
That's how it is with my wife's mom

So well said infection. Ainge got lucky in multiple ways in Boston. Hope it works again but I would rather have a legit plan.

Ainge justified waiting to tank because they "almost" had someone where it would have been better to have those vets than not.? If you justify keeping vets because you want them around a star you traded for, it would logically follow that a team in absence of those vets is not a good situation for an incoming star.

I don't think this necessarily means we are not looking for a star trade anymore, it's clear that Ainge wants that (or wants to pretend he's close), but I don't think we will make any marginal moves. That's probably why we weren't in on DJ. We will keep churning/tanking until we find that trade....not sure that's ever going to become available. I actually think that our chances of getting a star, even with Lauri on the team, will come from the draft.

Thanks for posting this. The rookies are certainly saying the right things. Let’s hope they’ll also act on it. Kind of cute that Taylor lives in Utah with his mom.

"Up and down season" was the theme for everyone. Each player was a total pro about talking about the half tank season. Lauri seemed the most annoyed by the question, but that's because he's pressed on it the most.

Sexton exudes energy. I wish someone asked him a question about how he sees his role and his place on the team going forward. I think the quick hook on him was one of the more odd stories about this season.

THT was the only player who showed some salt, but even then he was professional and I think his gripe was actually valid. He did get the short end of the stick. I think he lied about not knowing when he was going to play in the second half the season though.

Seems like I'm going to need to listen to the Lauri one. Thanks for posting all of these.

I agree with this in part, but it’s definitely being overstated - ESPECIALLY the KG stuff, which did not in any way fall out of the sky.

Ainge is deeply strategic, including long term strategic plans. This is a good read:

I don’t see any way that he’s a wing. Doesn’t have wing skills. Hes a stretch smallish big
Would you say Royce O'Neal was a wing for us?

3 and D doesn't require wing skills other than shooting.

Yep. Wing for me simply means being capable of guarding perimeter players and floating around the perimeter offensively. Obviously there are different levels of wings but that is kind of the minimum standard for me and Taylor is able to hit that as a sf.

The more quotes or rehashing I hear from the Ainge presser I'm starting to be convinced that if we can't find something we want to buy early in the offseason or maybe even by the draft... that we might end up being a seller. I think the preference is to buy but its not a mandate.
