What's new

What should we ask from Spurs for Lauri?

He's going to be moved at some point. We had no idea he would be this good when he was a part of the Donovan trade. We basically won the lottery when it turned out he's awesome, except it made our draft position the last couple years a lot worse. Just a shame he doesn't fit the timeline. The only way he fits is if Danny can somehow land a star with all this picks in the very near future. Seems unlikely.

a bunch of picks from next year to 2031 that in all probability won't pan out to be as good as Lauri and if they are not until early next decade for a guy with his unique skills who isn't really old and by all accounts really wants to live in Utah ?? blurgh not keen

The picks are weak. But Harrison Barnes can be traded for more assets and Keagan Murray is on track to be Lauri Maarkanen #2 in 2 years. He comes with a better timetable. Throw in Carter for Danny Ainge's tip. We would probably need some salary filler to add Carter on. If we REALLY like Keagan it gets us a blue chip prospect plus gobs of draft capital.

Nah, prefer the picks imo.

Chris Paul signing in free agency with Spurs tells me the Spurs are serious about competing this year and is done tanking.

Lauri is the missing piece and they have the assets to do it.

Im fairly confident in saying that CP3 at 73 years of age is not a win now piece for the Spurs.

I'm guessing he is there to help Wemby develop optimally on and off the court. Also isnt CP3 the thing Stephon Castle wishes to be one day?

What I mean is CP3 would not join a tanking team at this age.

They must have talked at length about the direction of the team this year before signing.

Might have talked about a coaching position or front office position with him as well after he retires.
Pop is getting way old and cp3 seems like the type that will continue in the NBA after retiring as a player.

Spurs had just traded for Harrison Barnes.

They’re officially a win-now team.

Victor Wembenyama
Lauri Markkanen
Harrison Barnes
Stephon Castle
Chris Paul

That could be an 8 seed in the West next year.

The Hoop Collective were talking about how they think the CP3/Barnes thing is a stealth tank move.

I mean CP is 39 now and I'd guess is good to miss 20 games even in a "healthy" season so I can see what they might be saying. But I thought he was cooked at the end of his Rockets days so I'm not good at predicting player decline in this modern sports science world.

His biggest factor will always be his locker room presence, the transformation he made in the teardown thunder a few years ago is impressive and then he helped the Suns make their jump. I think he can also be a locker room negative if the team is not listening to him in the way he thinks it should

The Spurs used up their cap space and so they now cannot R&E Lauri, which takes them out of the equation imo. The only teams that I could conceivably still meet our asking price is GSW, because they are desperate or Detroit because they still have cap space for an R&E.
