Olympics Thread

Womens archery final is on, and the contestants are called Nam Suhyeon and Lim Sihyeon.

The crowd in Paris has to have difficulties deciding who to root for.

You realize you’ve quoted a poster with over a decade of troll-baiting troll behavior, right?

It’s incredible that this board continues to be a flammable place for him.
I do. Just wanted to point it out so that those who bit on it wouldnt do so next time.

I mean I get why people think that born men shouldn't be able to transition and compete against women.
The advantage that men have over women athletically is different than the advantage that being tall or whatever gives.

For example, in the nba there are very tall players like gobert and wemby. But there are also very short players as well. There are dudes with long arms and short arms. There are dudes who can jump really high and there are Joe Ingles. What there isn't are any women. Why? It's not because women aren't allowed in the NBA. If a woman was good enough to play in the NBA then she would be in the NBA. There just aren't any women in the entire world that are good enough to play in the NBA. Same with the top leagues in soccer, football, rugby, tennis, golf, etc. those sports aren't trying to keep women from playing with the men. They want the best athletes at those sports regardless of sex. They just want to win. Women just aren't able to compete against men in any of those sports. The fastest women time in the 100 meters in history would probably not be in the top 50 of fastest men's time.
The farthest drive that a woman ever hit in golf wouldn't mean anything compared with the men's longest drives. Serena Williams most powerful serve she ever hit would not be anywhere close to Nadal, Djokovic, etc. Same thing with discus, weightlifting, long distance running, long jump, swimming etc.
That is why we separate men's and women's sports.
It is what it is.

But in this instance (the Olympic women's boxing) I don't see an issue.

You make an extraordinary number of claims without evidence in such a short post. It’s enough to make a reasonable reader suspicious that you’re just relaying talking points.

The easiest claim to falsify is Serena Williams’ speed in her serve. I encourage you to actually look it up (look at it vs the champions in the men’s’ tournaments, but also look at it versus tour averages). You’re also going to find some similar things when you actually look into driving distances in professional golf: the longest hitters on the women’s tour are well within range of the men’s tour averages.

Marathon records:

The current world record time for men over the distance is 2 hours and 35 seconds, set in the Chicago Marathon by the late Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya on 8 October 2023. The world record for women was set by Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia in the Berlin Marathon on 24 September 2023, in 2 hours 11 minutes and 53 seconds.

^clearly universes apart. “Means nothing compared to…”

Actually 남수현 and 임시현. Names seem quite different to me.
Are you trying to look smart here or what is your point?

Crowd doesnt see their names spelled in Korean on the scoreboard so my pun, however weak or cheap it may be, still holds.

You have offered absolutely nothing other than just grandstanding on a "both sides" argument of nothingness
lol. I opened up by posting a thread put together by a guy who has made human performance and the science behind it his life’s work. To which you eye rolled. I’m sorry I didn’t offer such scorching hot takes as “the reason there are men and women’s sports is because there are 50% males and 50% females”. Either you are dumb or trolling.

If I add nothing then why do you get sooooooooo fired up and respond soooo much. Put me on ignore. I’m not adding anything lol.

It'd be like saying crowd doesn't know who to root for, Johnny Smith or Genny Schmidt. LOOK HOW CLOSE THOSE NAMES ARE!!!!

Point is the two names have one syllable the same and the surnames aren't really all that close.

Again, what is your point? I'm ruling out looking smart so must be something else.

If two best male archers were Johnny Smith and Genny Schmidt that would also be a rather funny coincidence and worth pointing out.

The point is that any names (no matter how different in the native language) can easily be seen as similar to someone without a background in that language. It would be the same if someone who had little experience with Finnish names made a joke about how similar Lauri Markkanen and Mika Häkkinen must be.

Those names sounding similar to people not experienced in the language was the whole base of my pun.

Im not arguing against my own ignorance of Korean names and language, but your example is not even close to being analogous. Exaggarating to emphasize a point does not belong in an intelligent debate.

My point is that these Korean names have a similar level of difference in the Korean language as those Finnish examples do. (In both cases) are they more similar than other possibilities? Sure. Would any Korean/Finn ever mix them up? Never.

So yes, I agree that the pun makes sense because we (as non-Koreans) don't have familiarity with Korean names (that it's our subjective viewpoint that makes the names seem similar, not any objective criteria). If that's your key point, sorry I misunderstood.

The surnames are Nam, like Vietnam, and Lim*, which I suppose would be pronounced the same as in Limit. That's not really all that close in pronunciation OR spelling. That's what's confusing about it.

*Surname is really "Im" directly romanized, but spelling it Lim matches what the romanization of 이 surname to Lee when it's really pronounced "ee."

Thats why I kept asking for the point.

It wasnt even a pun towards the athletes or their names, but towards the crowd that presumably mostly consists of French people.

Okay, that makes some sense.

Perhaps the reason I was defensive is because in the US we have a tendency to stereotype Asians as lacking individuality (which being unable to differentiate names plays into). I was just trying to work against this tendency.

Did anyone see the end of the road cycling race?

The leading biker got a puncture like 5 km before the end. With panic, he had to flag down the bike carrier, grab a random bike and carry on to win gold.

That was awesome.. lol..
