Olympics Thread

Actually 남수현 and 임시현. Names seem quite different to me.
Are you trying to look smart here or what is your point?

Crowd doesnt see their names spelled in Korean on the scoreboard so my pun, however weak or cheap it may be, still holds.

You have offered absolutely nothing other than just grandstanding on a "both sides" argument of nothingness
lol. I opened up by posting a thread put together by a guy who has made human performance and the science behind it his life’s work. To which you eye rolled. I’m sorry I didn’t offer such scorching hot takes as “the reason there are men and women’s sports is because there are 50% males and 50% females”. Either you are dumb or trolling.

If I add nothing then why do you get sooooooooo fired up and respond soooo much. Put me on ignore. I’m not adding anything lol.

It'd be like saying crowd doesn't know who to root for, Johnny Smith or Genny Schmidt. LOOK HOW CLOSE THOSE NAMES ARE!!!!

Point is the two names have one syllable the same and the surnames aren't really all that close.

Again, what is your point? I'm ruling out looking smart so must be something else.

If two best male archers were Johnny Smith and Genny Schmidt that would also be a rather funny coincidence and worth pointing out.

The point is that any names (no matter how different in the native language) can easily be seen as similar to someone without a background in that language. It would be the same if someone who had little experience with Finnish names made a joke about how similar Lauri Markkanen and Mika Häkkinen must be.

Those names sounding similar to people not experienced in the language was the whole base of my pun.

Im not arguing against my own ignorance of Korean names and language, but your example is not even close to being analogous. Exaggarating to emphasize a point does not belong in an intelligent debate.

My point is that these Korean names have a similar level of difference in the Korean language as those Finnish examples do. (In both cases) are they more similar than other possibilities? Sure. Would any Korean/Finn ever mix them up? Never.

So yes, I agree that the pun makes sense because we (as non-Koreans) don't have familiarity with Korean names (that it's our subjective viewpoint that makes the names seem similar, not any objective criteria). If that's your key point, sorry I misunderstood.

The surnames are Nam, like Vietnam, and Lim*, which I suppose would be pronounced the same as in Limit. That's not really all that close in pronunciation OR spelling. That's what's confusing about it.

*Surname is really "Im" directly romanized, but spelling it Lim matches what the romanization of 이 surname to Lee when it's really pronounced "ee."

Thats why I kept asking for the point.

It wasnt even a pun towards the athletes or their names, but towards the crowd that presumably mostly consists of French people.

Okay, that makes some sense.

Perhaps the reason I was defensive is because in the US we have a tendency to stereotype Asians as lacking individuality (which being unable to differentiate names plays into). I was just trying to work against this tendency.

Did anyone see the end of the road cycling race?

The leading biker got a puncture like 5 km before the end. With panic, he had to flag down the bike carrier, grab a random bike and carry on to win gold.

That was awesome.. lol..
