Training Camp Thread

So proud! Our nat. team legend and former Lauri's team mate Petteri Koponen is coaching them. (He was once drafted, later offered contract to NBA but decided keep playing in a big role for euroleague teams)
I remember hoping the Jazz would trade for his rights. Guess it's best they didn't.

From what I've seen/heard about Svi, he's one of those guys that gets a little playing time and everyone starts thinking that "this guy's pretty good, maybe he needs to play more."

Then when he gets rotation minutes, you just see that there's nothing all that special there. Might as well play someone with more "upside" (younger or a plus wingspan).

But he's not bad at all; he won't be embarrassing if he's on the court.

Sounds like Jonas Jerebko.

Yeah but sometimes they put it together

If a young player is being gatekept from the rotation by a Svi/Juzang/Eubanks level player…I’m not losing any sleep over it. At this level I don’t think “high upside” should be the concern…”NBA caliber player” should be the focus when handling these players.

I don't know anything I've seen from media day that was showing off the bodies.

I think we're going to have to be patient with Cody. Nothing we see for a year or two at least, I suspect, is going to make him look anything but rather thin.

Looks like Juzang and Hendricks were the two guys slotting into the starter group with Kessler, Lauri, Sexton, and Key.

I'd expect Hendricks to be the 5th starter. I'd predict that Svi and Juzang were subbing in for Sexton for some of the practice session. Below, you can see that Svi and Juzang are wearing purple jerseys, which I think is 3rd string. It's just that Svi has a black jersey on top of his purple jersey.

They've just got him on weights. Give him a minute.

Not gonna read too much into it, but Juzang is seen playing with Sexton and the starters. Juzang and Svi are the most like Simone so it would make sense if they are able to earn that spot.

Not the greatest indicator for Hendricks though…I really feel as though he should be able to nail down that starter position. Didn’t seem like Hardy or his teammates were very high on Hendricks last year though.

New Zealand Breakers plays in the Australian NBL. The team is coached by the Finnish former all-time-great player Petteri Koponen (former team-mate of Lauri in the Finnish national team).

NZB is not the most skilled team, not by NBA or even by NBL standards. The team has this season however been doing well in the first matches of the season (extremely well actually, considering they were not given a farts chance in a sand-storm this season). Koponen wants NZB to play similar high-intensity game as he got used to with the Finnish national team (which also was/is not very skilled); on offense the players and the ball moves constantly, on defense the pressure on the ball-handler is nearly suicidal. The team is apparently physically in very good shape, and they can keep on running until doomsday. Depending on how stiff the legs of the Jazz players are from the training-camp, the Jazz guards especially might get a full run for the money.

For the three matches vs the NBA teams, NZB has hired the gargantuan giant Tacko Fall. Tacko Fall is one of the humans who can dunk without jumping. He fits the NZB mold in the sense that he is not very skilled, but he has never been known as much of a runner; how he will be integrated to the team for these three matches is surely a question mark. Tacko Fall has spent the past couple seasons in China, but he was with the Cleveland organization in 2021-2022, so at least Lauri and Sexton should recognise him.

Well, that's a huge relief. I don't know how else anyone could recognize 7"6 tall Tacko.
