Cody Williams Hype and Appreciation Thread

I think I would rank him firmly above Hendricks in the rookie contract power rankings, but still well below Keyonte.

Well, making a comp at this time seems foolish. As I haven't seen very much of him yet.

But, my initial impression is CJ Miles.

Now. I always thought CJ was the dumbest player on the team. But, he had a great body and some decent skills. He just never figured out how to use either. At least while on the Jazz. CJ Miles with a good NBA brain is probably a really good player.

But, I'm hoping you Paul George guys are closer to the mark than I am. For now, EXTREMELY early, I'm going with a smarter CJ Miles.

I'm hoping he can be like a 6'8" version of Latrell Sprewell--a wiry guy who can do a bit of everything and can go into scoring mode when he needs to. He definitely needs to get stronger before he can start dominating guys, but if he does then look out.

He's not going to be as explosive or bouncy as Paul George.

Don’t read too much into a preseason game dominated by bench/young prospects that won’t play much.

You know who else looked good in preseason in their rookie season? Jared Butler. Just stop. It also doesn’t hurt that his shot was falling last night

Jared Butler couldn't play defense, at all. Not in pre-season, not ever. Neither could Trey Burke. A player that can play defense as well as Williams right out of the gate that looks to be just average offensively is something to be excited about (this is probably Hendricks btw.) Somebody that plays defense that well, has flashed dynamic offense, AND is obviously at the low point of their physical development size-wise, is somebody that we SHOULD be over exuberant about. Comparing him to Burke and Butler is just moronic.

Fwiw I hated both the trey burke and Dante exum picks from day 1. Especially hated the trey burke pick.

I also hated the Burke pick. I was nervous about Exum, because he was such an unknown. I was not excited but also did not hate it because there was basically little film on him outside the McDonalds game where he killed it, so I did not know how to feel about it.

Honestly, if Exum could have stayed healthy he could have been a good NBA player (he just got hurt again btw), and at the time, probably had the most "upside" of all the remaining lottery picks left on the board.

Jazz have had some suspect draft picks. I feel like they did an excellent job with the 24 draft.

Ya on the exum pick I didn't want him but I also wasn't very high on randle or smart so I wasn't too mad at the jazz picking exum (I wanted randle but not by much).
I was really mad at the burke pick. I didn't want burke regardless (I wanted cj McCollum) but the fact we traded up to get him really pissed me off

All I’m trying to do is explain to @The Midnight is that if Williams is going to be more than a 3&D player it’s going to be a multi year project. He’s super raw in all aspects of his offensive game. I’m not trying to say he sucks, but he needs time if he’s going to reach his full potential. Anyone that thinks Jared Butler didn’t look good his rookie season in preseason. You either have forgotten what he did or speaking out of your ***, and that has everything to do with Offense not defense.

Williams is also going to struggle at times on defense with his body the way it is let’s hope he can develop his body better than AK ever did. If he doesn’t his offensive ceiling will be low.

I don’t think he’s good at shooting on the move or even catch and shoot, I’ve seen him air all two threes on catch and shoot, he doesn’t create space with the ball in hand and isn’t much of a shooter right now at least when being guarded. He can spot up and straight line drive when the middle is open and can finish decently well which will also improve if he develops his body, and my fear is he’s long and has the body Popeye’s girlfriend I’m not sure how much more he can fill out. 6-7 - 6-8 whatever it is, and 190 Lb’s is crazy. He imo has a long road to get to where @The Midnight thinks he’s at.

NBA training is a whole different thing than college. Every Rookie from last year has been transformed physically, so it appears that the Jazz know what they are doing. I do think that playing defense on the point of attack is going to affect his offense until he gets in better shape.

Jared Butler showed some flashes on offense in the preseason as a rookie, but was also murdered over and over again on the defensive end. William is already looking like a net positive on defense, despite his inexperience. I give him a little better edge on his shooting than you do and I like how he isn't afraid to go to the cup which was a big problem with Exum, who would go to the basket without a plan and throw up a floater if anyone got in his way. Practicing against Kessler will do wonders for Williams in figuring out how to deal with NBA shot blocking.

Other than size and inexperience, things that are the easiest to fix, I don't really have a problem with any of Cody's game right now, which isn't true of any of our other young players.

Cody looked good. Not sure why we have to find opportunities to throw shade at Hendricks. I'm loving his on-ball defense fwiw
Taylor also has learned to play some basketball. Like last year this time he was struggling to throw outlet passes. Not like Kevin Love outlet passes... run of the mill outlet passes. He can drive a little bit from the baseline and has some ways to score and has made a couple nice passes from that spot. He should not drive down the middle right now (I'm okay with experimenting cuz that is what the season is about)... its an auto-turnover.

I believe in the shot. He had a really bad shooting game in Dallas but was encouraged he got 10 up at least. He has some bad misses when his feet aren't quite set but when he has time he seems to do pretty well.

Also, Cody was awesome in the game against Dallas. I need more of that. I don't think aggression is his nature so he needs to develop some of it and incorporate it into his habits on the court.

I think both guys were great uses of picks and if both hit you have length we've never seen at the 2-4 spots.

AK tried to fix his body his whole career and couldn’t. Some body types you just can’t put weight on when you’re as active as your every day nba basketball player. He can’t dribble. He’s got to be stationary for the most part to shoot, and has weak handles. Your not worried about those things?

Cody is so versatile. He is a coach's dream and can be plugged into any lineup. He has size, defends, looks to pass and involve the teammates, always tries to be in the right place, very deliberate, very coachable... He probably has the highest floor out of all our young guys.

His absolutely worst case would be someone like more athletic Kyle Anderson.

I don't know. I don't think he has the muscle needed to lay out his coach.

Yeah, those hours and hours of video games just never paid of for AK.

AKs problem, such as it was, wasn't his frame. He actually improved his body immensely from when he was 19.
