2024-25 Western Conference Prediction Contest

As @One Brow hasnt logged in since May, I decided to do a community service and take over this excercise just for this year. If the OG owner of this comes back in, I will happily hand this over.

Rules are the same as last year, apart from #6 which does not include a penalty.

1. Post your regular season final standings for all 15 teams in the Western Conference.
2. All predictions are frozen at 23:59 on 2024-OCT-21 (after the preseason, before the season). Any changes are okay before then. I will compile my list on OCT-22, the same day the regular season opens up.
3. Your score is based on the net difference between your prediction and standings. For example, if you pick the Clippers to be first and they are in fourth, you receive 3 points for the Clippers. Low score wins.
4. Ranking is based on win% only.
5. Tied teams each receive an averaged score. For example, two teams tied for 5th/6th place are each scored as 5.5. Three teams tied for 10/11/12 are each scored as 11.
6. Order the teams with the following 3-letter abbreviations, without numbers, punctuation, etc..

DAL
DEN
GSW
HOU
LAC
LAL
MEM
MIN
NOP
OKC
PHX
POR
SAC
SAS
UTA

I expect the updates will come whenever @The Midnight has whined about the lack of them for long enough.
Really surprised at where you have the jazz after our discussion in the "are we not bad" thread. Thought the eye test in those pre season games would have swayed you to put the jazz much higher.

Are you looking at my list or the OP that just has a list of teams in alphabetic order?

I think we are gonna hang out at the play in bubble until Ainge makes some moves which drops us to 13th. My biggest worry is that our record wont be bad enough to beat East bottom 4 in lottery ball race.

Good catch. I was looking at the OP.
Where you have them makes more sense now.

And the funny thing is I think Utah will be decent. West is going to be tightly bunched with very small segmentation sizes between each team respectively. The delta between West 10-15 and East 10-15 is going to be vast.

Just a reminder that standings are locked after 24 hours or so.

No need to repost the list as I will go through and collect all the lists as they stand at that moment.

Randomizer gave me this list after few rerolls (I got Jazz and Portland top 5 and DEN and OKC bottom 5 on my first go, so had to resort to rerolling).

Alright all predictions are locked in. I will put the standings up in the OP and hide the rules in a spoiler later.. but here are some interesting stats and details about the predictions. If you want other stats, dont be afraid to ask. I got tables, arrays and datasets all ready. ;)

All predictions were unique.

Consensus ranking:

TeamRank
OKC1

Hive mind award (closest to consensus):
@Ferguson_Mellochill, @Handlogten's Heros and @hgb (all scoring 8 points against consensus)

Bold prection award (furthest from consensus):
@Release the Kraken (54 points against consensus)

Wild card teams (top 3 in positional variance):
1. Grizzlies
2. Kings
3. Lakers

Consensus teams (bottom 3 in variance):
1. Suns (!!!!!)
2. Jazz
3. Thunder

OKC would have dominated the consensus team race if it wasnt for one 6th place vote. Everyone else had them at 1 or 2.

My top 6 are all consensus. Where I differ is putting both the Spurs and Blazers above the Jazz. The Blazers really impressed me with their length and athleticism in pre-season. Simons and Grant should be healthier for them this year, and adding Avdija and Clingan in the off-season should help them. Among the Jazz, Blazers and Spurs, the order should come down to who wants to lose more and pulls the most whacky lineups and DNPs. Jazz showed a really impressive ability to lose after the ASB last year. I think they'll pull the red handle earlier this season. Collins and Clarkson will be featured early for trades. Cody, Brice and Flip should be taking heavy minutes by the 2nd half of the season.
