Game Thread Oct 23, 2024 07:00PM MT: Memphis Grizzlies @ Utah Jazz

Added to Calendar: 10-23-24

Oh yeah, Vince as well. Forgot about him.

They have some depth.
They draft well. Maybe they arent true difference makers, but they got a lot of guys who can be rotation level. Vince Williams is one of their better defenders and glue guys. GG is more talented, but IDK how much his scoring style would really benefit a loaded Grizzlies team in year 2. Obviously sucks he is out, but if both are healthy on a healthy Grizzlies team, I think Vince contributes more to their team.

It's going to take him some time to really have a feel for when he should look to score and when he should look to facilitate.

A little more pressure on him when he's on the court with three non-creators in Lauri / Hendricks / Kessler too.

Key is frustrating because he looks the part and makes so many nice plays but he is just so inefficient
He can’t finish at the rim worth a crap. It was frustrating to watch

Keyonte is going to have good and bad games this year. The game threads will be unreadable if we continue to overreact to everything he does in his second year.
I was thinking the same thing in regards to Kessler. Walker had one of his best games ever and certain people were only able to see any little negative thing he did and never credit him with anything positive.

At least keyonte had a very bad game and that was the reason for the comments.

If he goes 8-18 or something next game then he won't get hated on.

There is a group of posters who want to bash him whenever they can. Its the same guys every time.

Seems to me like they dislike his brand of basketball too much to root for the guy. Its definitely poorly founded to constantly jump on a 20 year old who plays as well as Key and who also gets a lot of hype/trust from the coach and vast majority of fanbase and media.

But it is what it is.
Personally I love keyonte (made a point to post about it in this thread Even when he was struggling mightily). His confidence, size, athleticism, form on his shot, confidence, ability to draw fouls, all make me believe he is going to be a great player in the NBA. He needs the ball to go in the hoop more frequently though or he needs to shoot less and look for teammates more. Or just needs time. Probably all of the above.

I think sometimes people care more about being right about an opinion than about being objective.

No doubt.
I'm sure I do it plenty. Human nature.

What I doubt I will ever do is trash talk jazz players while they are having a career night. I never liked KO but when he was ballin I kept my trap shut.
I want Clarkson gone but he played great last night and I gave him plenty of credit during the game. Collins ain't my favorite but holy crap he was tough against Edey.

He made some shots even made some good passes but he doesn’t allow the team to get in rhythm offensively with his over dribbling and tunnel vision there were 3 or four times I watched him miss wide open teammates for layups and dunks because of him over dribbling looking for his shot against the offensive game plan. Yes he made shots but he’s part of why we lost, and if we were looking for wins the entire fan base would be on his ***. I’m tired of atching him play hero ball.

One thing about keyonte is that he has proven to me that his long range floater push shot thing (long range as in a few feet farther away from the basket than most floaters) he does is usually money. I think he attempted about 4 of those shots and they missed. I don't think that happens again all season. That's his move and it's damn near unguardable.

Last night was just one of those off nights that happen on occasion to everyone.

Fans can fan how they want to. It's annoying sometimes, but nothing you can do about it. The game threads are the worst threads on Jazzfanz, and sometimes I just have to ignore them.

I personally think it's fine to point out negatives, even when a player is generally positive, but you are right that when a poster isn't balanced in their feedback it comes off as hating.

I don't think Memphis looks that great, I wouldn't peg them as a playoff team yet. They are relying a lot on unproven players in Edey, Wells, and Pippen Jr. I like all 3 of those players, but they will have growing pains this year.

I'm guessing there are some Edey doubters using this game as evidence they were right. He wasn't able to stay on the court and the defense was awful with him in the game. If you paid attention, however, you could see how much attention he was getting and how much that opened up shots for his teammates. The one truly concerning thing, in my opinion, was that Ja does not seem to like him. At the very least Ja does not want to give him the ball in the post. Memphis is probably better staggering their minutes and letting Edey eat in the second unit for now.
Very much this. I was laughing that he didn't get it in the post especially after they had been tangled up several times. Would have been an auto foul and two free throws.

Memphis I would be a bit concerned. JJJ and Williams would help a bunch and Clarke needs to find his legs again... but the most concerning things for me would be Smart looks like dog ****. Maybe he works his way into shape but he was rough. The other is Ja seems a bit too interested in basking in the glow of his own greatness at times. Go ahead and talk yo **** but if the ball is live maybe work your way back on defense while you do it. Key got free throws cuz you wanted to celebrate with like a minute left in the game.

I actually love Pippen and think he might be more productive than Smart if last night was an indicator. Wells and Edey made a bunch of dumb mistakes/fouls that cost em. They will clean that up tho I'm guessing.

Game threads are for the game. I think people get way to upset when you're saying something about the game and then they think it's about the entirety of that player's existence. Like if we point out that Key did something bad, it's not a statement on his entire future as a whole. On the other hand, I definitely think people try hard to push their agendas no matter what. It's definitely annoying when people try so hard to inject an agenda into a game thread. That's not just a game thread thing though, it's everywhere. The game thread (during the game) is about the game and not always about a larger opinion.

I agree that Key's floater is relatively good, but I really think he needs to lean on his foul baiting ability more often. Even when you're good at them, it's still not necessarily a great shot. On nights like last night, I think Key shys away from his 3 ball...which is somewhat understandable when you're struggling so bad. But it lead to a million floaters and mid range shots which makes these bad nights even worse imo. He ended up getting 9 FT's which is great, but a bunch of them came at the end in junky situations. Should have turned to that more early and often when things aren't going his way. Refs were calling everything last night. Could have been a 15 FT kind of night if he was more savvy.

Hendricks and Kessler are for sure confidence players. A couple things go right and everything starts happening. But if things don’t go as planned you might just not see them all night. They were both great yesterday.

It was kind of impossible to play good defense last night bc everything was a foul and both teams shot it decently, but I thought those two were really good.
Dudes are petrified that they're gonna get benched for John Collins or Clarkson with one bad. mistake
