i'd let sexton do his thing at that moment. He had 8 points in the 4th. Calling a timeout smells like tanking or just glory coaching. The play after that timeout was trash anyways.

Great result. Losses like this can make the difference between us snagging a stud or missing out on draft night. As for Hardy’s timeout, I wouldn’t make a big deal of it. He saw Sexton dribbling and going sideways with Rui in front of him and Davis at the rim and made a quick decision. And anyway, Davis, who noticed Hardy running and heard the whistle, stopped playing and let Sexton make his shot.

The thing that doesn't get mentioned is that AD's man (either Kessler or Collins) can move into the vacated area and get a dunk or layup off the action if AD comes to block the shot.

Some of these comments are flat out bizarre. Sexton wasn't "robbed" of anything, he was dribbling around in circles without any idea what he was going to do when Hardy stepped on the court, called timeout and the Lakers obviously stopped playing. No wonder Collin was able to get to the basket with the defense standing around going "WTF you doing, bro?"

Sexton was terrible all game, and the fact that the Jazz are now "putting him on the trade block" (as if he hasn't been there all along) is hilarious.
What a clownshoes take.

He was already past Rui when the whistle blew. and Rui didn't stop defending until well after the shot was attempted.

Maybe AD comes to contest if there's no whistle, but then there's two players (Kessler and Laur) in great position at the rim to dump it off to (or to even put it back in if Sexton still attempts the shot but misses).

Is there a guarantee the Jazz score? Obviously not. Would it have been better than whatever the mess was they ran out of the timeout? Obviously.

I don’t think Sexton scores there if the Lakers keep playing, but pretty comical the way it looks.

Calling a TO with less than 2 seconds on the clock just isn’t a great decision though. If he was going to call a TO he was a few seconds too late.

It looked to me he had gotten by the defender in the middle of a clear path to the hoop when the whistle blew and half a second later the shot was up. No one stopped playing. No one has that good of a reaction time. He would’ve scored.

AD is certainly making some kind of play there. He is in perfect position but literally stops playing.

I think to assume AD swats that you have to think that AD saw Hardy call timeout while also processing everything going on during the play. And he might have, but the first whistle you hear is when Sexton is completely past the defender. If that is right when AD stopped then he maybe gets it or bothers it enough that it misses. He does have to make a move though and while I think Sexton is likely thinking shot first he also is very capable of making the read.

The mistake was really not calling timeout with 5-6 seconds left. At that point you have to live with the result of the play. Sexton retreats at 3.1 which is when Hardy calls the timeout, but a retreat dribble doesn't mean he is stuck there at all. Its a way to get space or blow by a guy (as he did). If he was doubled and truly stuck I understand the timeout... he was setting up the move. Since Hardy wasn't on top of the ref you get 2.1 instead of 3.1 seconds but that doesn't matter much. Have to trust Sexton there once it got past 5-6 second mark imo. Hardy got caught in the air.

Also, I ain't mad at all lol. Perfect result. We can claim victory and it goes down as an L. Long live the Tank.

I'm pretty sure Hardy decided to call the timeout at the point when he saw Sexton going sideways with Rui in front of him. I mean I don't think he would've done it after Sexton had already passed Rui (that's when we heard the whistle). But whatever, a nice L for the draft.

Correct he said he tried to call timeout when he made a retreat dribble... which is with 3.1 seconds left. The first whistle is heard once Sexton is all the way in front of Rui at 2.1 seconds. At 5-6 seconds as the ball is crossing half court is the time to decide there is no advantage and call timeout imo. Even though Sexton is going sideways its still better than a SLOB play with 2-3 seconds left. If we had a closer I get it but with the ball in hand I don't think there is anyone better than Sexton on the roster. I think its just the coach micromanaging the situation. They are control freaks.

Its also execution... you can't have any pause between when you start to call the timeout and when its granted. So he needed to start at halfcourt rather than hanging out in the coaches box. He's still developing too. its a tremendous L so ain't gonna cry.

Just watched the replay like 5 times. Davis was flat footed the moment the whistle blew. And Davis was hesitant to leave Kessler, plus if Davis steps up it’s an easy dump off for a wide *** open dunk for Kessler. He didn’t stop playing. Look at the body language. His body didn’t relax till well after the shot.
