What's new

Is next season as a tank pretty much off the table?

I don't think there has ever been a team that has decided to start using assets to bring in a win now players based on a draft pick. We might be in a unique situation, but I just can't see Ainge drafting an 18 year old Cooper Flagg and deciding he's the guy before seeing him play a minute of NBA basketball.
Yep different situations definitely come into play.

The spurs for instance seemed ready to win now immediately after drafting Duncan for example. Because their roster was ready to win.

I think that the jazz roster is close to being ready to win now. Get Flagg and add him to a solid core of Lauri, Sexton, Collins and Kessler. Collier and keyonte look like quality NBA players. Go after some quality free agents and use assets (draft picks) to get some quality players to replace the Micah potters and Cody Williams and Brice sensabaughs and filipowskis etc in the rotation.
Coach to win. Increase the minutes of the best players.

I think we make the playoffs next season if we want to.

I don't really remember on Duncan, but I don't think they started spending draft picks or make big free agency signings to go build around him? He was also a 4 year college guy, not an 18 year old.

I do agree that it might be possible to flip the roster in the off season and try for the playoffs next year. I just doubt that the FO will feel that way. I think regardless of who we get in the draft Ainge will either stand pat to see what things look like before making moves, or be a seller in the off season to ensure the tank.

You might be right about whether the decision is based on one particular draft pick. But I think @fishonjazz is right that the overall situation is the better guide. Houston decided to get win now vets after (probably not because of) drafting Amen, and it's seemed to work out pretty well because of their overall situation. OKC started to win (whether they wanted to tank or not) after drafting Chet, even though he wasn't even playing that season.

So my point is that the overall team situation is going to dictate whether we start to win. The FO may contribute to what that overall situation is through win-now moves, but presumably they would do so (rightly or wrongly) on their evaluation that the time is right.
