How Many Basketball Hoops are in Your Neighborhood?

I pretty much agree. I can't really imagine dedicating that much indoor space for a basketball hoop. If I came from a tall family and had a young kid or kids that were interested in bball I might do it, but otherwise I wouldn't do it.

Well, if I was much more well off than I am maybe I'd do it just for the hell of it, but I'm not more well of than I am.
My GF's boss is a Mormon with a massive family. His house has a separate barn that's an entire regulation full-court with side hoops. It's insane. It's where they throw their holiday parties for work.

We use ours for birthday parties, kids ride bikes (no skidding!) scooters, play soccer, badminton year round. Such a bonus in the short days in winter. I shoot for an hour most nights, Have kids practices there and can walk inside the house after (my court is in an outbuilding). Saves me from the hour plus round trip to take kids to practice at The Warehouse (Stockton has an old Jazz court there, which is cool). Host regular pickup games as well.

My kids friends always want to come here. We put a portable projector out there and avoid the noise inside. The time saved and ability to always have our kids here has been such an amazing gift. Probably the best thing is the 1 on 1 time I get with my 5 year old who always wants to play basketball with dad. My only regrets are not building it sooner, and not making it bigger.

I've done my best to choose hobbies that keep me home. I quit golfing and started playing all of my pickup ball at 530 am or 9pm to keep time open for family. I have restored a number of Land Cruisers with my kids learning, playing ball at home with the kids. I know many with expensive boats that have a lot of great family time and experiences. I hate boating, but am happy that it brings many joy.

Most American's enjoy excess, with bigger houses, vacation houses, expensive boats, snowmobiles, season tickets, food quantity and more. If you can afford it, more power to you. I did see a regular phenomenon in UT where so many people lived outside there means, did not save for retirement, etc., and hope they don't regret it later, but most of my friends that live that way seem happy, so good for them I suppose.

I had a former business partner that had been to over 100 Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd concerts. It was his thing. I always thought it was so cool he did what made him happy. Life is so short, be happy, and **** anyone who judges you for it.

In all sincerity good for you, that sounds pretty great. FWIW, the few people I know who have basketball courts in their homes are really great people.

It's just hard for me to fathom being able to afford something like that. I just looked it up and I make well above the middle class income for where I live and housing here is relatively inexpensive, but I couldn't even get the third car garage on my house that I wanted. It's all relative though, and I understand that. I remember at one point in my life I wanted a truck, but the expense seemed so excessive, and now I'm at a point in my life where I own a truck and it just seems normal.

I think if I did have the type of money to do something excessive I would own a house on a lake with a dock. I don't actually own a boat, but I would if I had a house on a lake with a dock, lol.

I have a small 3 bd lake house in MT. My wife kids love it. Lots of visitors. Lots of work for me. A boat would make it worse. I like whitewater, not lakes. We have human powered boats/sups. No motorized boats to tow and do maintenance on.
I'll keep for another 10 years for the kids and then sell.

Speaking of boats, my friend bought a new Bayliner that was more than my quote from 2 years ago for a full court sized pole barn with court floor tiles(I already had the land and have connections in construction/concrete). We looked at adding in a quarter court to my old house, and the cost was insane, even with friends quoting. Pole barns/quonsets are the way to go if you have the land for it. I had a quonset on my property already and I went the "cheaper" route and built the court in it. It is 40x60x20. The full court pole barn would have been $75k with the court tiles and me doing some labor with friends I ball with (no hvac). Quonset ceiling is just high enough. The corner 3 on the half court requires a flatter arc.

With the quonset the 3 hoops and 40x60 flooring were about $9k (pre tariffs). Another $14k for hvac and closed cell insulation, which is the only good option for a metal quonset. Definitely not cheap, but really not bad. The court is responsive, looks like wood (sort of) and is slightly louder than Snapsports or Sport Court indoor tiles. A full court would have been awesome,

It is crazy what boats and jet skis cost. As well as cars. I am lucky to have family and friends that helped with my build. I did the underlayment, floors, lines and built the 3 full size hoops myself. Bought indoor court tiles and hoops from China for a fraction of the cost of the US hoop and sport floor companies (most source from China anyway). The hoops are 72" glass solid portable units. Tvs mounted inside for watch Jazz while playing. If I lived in Utah I'd invite JFC peeps over to play.

We had indoor space for basketball at home, well we did until I broke a couple of stained glass doors on one of the cabinets in the living room and my folks went ape ****...
My friend did too. They installed a retractable net to keep ball off windows and the kitchen. My friend's mom hated it. :)

How's the traction? What kind of maintenance does it require if you are using it regularly?
