Taylor Hendricks Hype Thread

K fellas, we've seen a few games post recovery. way too early assessment: what are we thinking, is he back? has he learned how to play? Injury wise, he does look ok. still question if he knows how to play but maybe that will come, and for basically a delayed rookie, he is doing decent.

The shot looks good. Other than that we need to give him time.

Looks better than expected offensively but worse defensively.
Bigger and stronger but slower.

All in all I'm happy when what I have seen so far

Seems like Hendricks is involved with most of the Jazz defensive lapses.
They are putting him in some challenging spots defensively after not having played in a year and it's not like the Jazz were sound defensively when he actually DID play his rookie year. He is going to be fine.

There are two different arguments here

1. Taylor Hendricks has never been actually good at defense at any point, he's only been hypothetically good at defense and him not translating the hypothetically good to actually good is concerning
2. He's played like 4 semi meaningful games in his entire life so him still being a bad defender isn't really surprising.

Even before the injury I thought TH had to discover his defensive identity. Wasn’t sure if he was going to be more of an on or off ball defender or both. He seemed to be going the on ball stopper route before the injury, but he’s a different kind of athlete now. His body suits him being more of a secondary rim protector/big, but I think this role requires a higher basketball iq. His overall feel and IQ has never been his strength as a player….but I think that role has more overall impact.

I think Hendricks' body type is much more suited to offense than defense, but his skill level is not good enough yet to take advantage of it. It's weird how much weight he put on, I don't know what it's for unless he learns how to drive to the basket.

I have enjoyed seeing him do more passing, ball handling, floaters, rim runs/dunk so far this season.
Small sample size but comparing his first two season numbers vs this season his field goal percentage is up, 3 point percentage is up, efg is up (by alot), points are up (all those shooting/scoring numbers are career highs), rebounds are up. (career high per 36)

His minutes so far this season are a career low though. Rookie year he averaged 21.4 mpg, second season averaged 25.0 mpg, and this season is currently at 17.5 mpg. If niang comes back and Ace minutes go up and Kyle anderson ever cracks the rotation then he might be in the G league.

Hopefully his minutes increase as his conditioning/injury recovery increases.

If Hendricks's on-the-court development isn't a huge storyline this year, then I'm going to be pissed. He's easily in the top-3 or top-4 jazz players that matter the most to the longer-term trajectory of this team (over the next 3 to 5 seasons).
