Rookie Contract Power Rankings

The Dunc`d On-guys just had their annual Mock Rookie Extension pod in which they ended up with us not extending Kessler this year, but having an under the table deal with him that he would sign for 5 for $130 next off season if we did not trade him before then.

Makes a lot of sense. Could open up ~$15M in cap space for the Jazz depending on how the contract would be structured. I think that number is a little low based on comparables, however. Poetl with AAV of $28M per. Naz Reid signed for 5/$125.

If I’m Kessler and his agent, I’d probably just want to enter the season with a 100% guarantee that I’m a hundred millionaire and get the deal done now. Doesn’t matter how strong that promise seems, I’m putting pen to paper with this amount of money on the line.

From the Jazz perspective, I would heavily prioritize the front loading of his next contract.

Our ATL boys. Anyone want to hyper analyze Kessler’s physique this year?

Dude gained at least 15 pounds of muscle. And a 5% increase in hand pad size. All star here we come!!

Post Pre-season/Pre-Season Rankings:

  1. Ace Bailey
  2. Walker Kessler
  3. Kyle Filipowski
  4. Keyonte George
  5. Walter Clayton Jr
  6. Brice Sensabaugh
  7. Taylor Hendricks
  8. Cody Williams
  9. Isaiah Collier
1-2 was pretty easy. Flip was an easy 3 for me because I think he has a very high ceiling offensively). 4-7 are pretty tough and all roughly tied. I put Cody ahead of Collier because I believe in his defense to be a strong suit. Must see some sort of shooting improvement from Collier to get him out of last.

Can’t really argue with any of this. We’ll see if WCJ hits the ground running or if he’s stuck way behind Collier to start the season.

Agree that 4-7 is incredibly difficult and I have zero idea how I’d rank those slots.

My post-preseason rankings:

1. Ace
2. Kessler
3. Flip (really excited about his upcoming season)
4. Hendricks (ranked this high because he looked much better than I anticipated, given his time off, and because of the value of his archetype. I think it's much safer now to bet on him becoming a starting-caliber player.)
5. Keyonte (could easily rise beyond Hendricks if the TS% and defense improve)
6. WCJ (once his shooting comes online, he could push for third or fourth)
7. Brice (he could honestly be pushing for second or third on this list if he proved more defensively. I'm a genuine believer in his offense.)
8. Collier
9. Cody (he showed me that he could be a riser on this list. But, right now, he's still ninth.)

Everyone seems to be giving up on Collier. I think he's the best ball handler / passer (by quite a bit between he, George & WCJ). I'm willing to give him another year to see if he can figure the shot out.

PGs who cant shoot just dont exist in the NBA anymore outside of some exceptions, but those players are usually good mid-range shooters (like a TJ McConnell) and are almost always backups. And they are basically never sub 70% from the FT line.

Bare minimum he has to get to around 33% on open 3pt shots, and he's a far way away.

I dont think I've "given up" on him, but I see the hardest path to being a rotation player for Collier. But him and Cody are really neck and neck for me.

I'm as big of a Collier-believer as you'll find on this board. But he's 8th in my power ranking for a good reason.

Going to do this once a month or so, update my rankings of all the players on the rookie contracts.

  1. Keyonte
  2. Cody
  3. Kessler
  4. Flip
  5. Hendricks
  6. Collier
  7. Sensabaugh
Curious as to why Cody is so high and Hendricks so low? I’ve been so impressed by how far along Hendricks is so soon after the injury. I know it’s just preseason but it looks like having Hendricks out all season might’ve been a blessing in disguise.
